Adela Sinclair's personal strength and force are palpable on each page of this vivid collection, as she draws the reader in initially by her exile to the United States in 1987-saying "La Revedere" (Goodbye) to Arad, Romania. Then she proceeds to return to her life in communist Romania memory by memory, sense by sense (taste, sight, touch), confrontation, longing, and, ultimately, a resolve to commit to the promise of New York City's streets. A rich combination of necessary documentation of daily life during communism, memorial to her family's struggle, unthinkable tragedy, personal song, and quest for place, Sinclair is uncompromising in her assertion of her own womanhood in every step of her journey. In the poem "For Mihai Eminescu," the poet finds herself in symbolic dialogue with Romania's most famous poet, and this meeting is an exquisite metaphor for the book itself. Sinclair looks back to her native language and country, first to deny that language matters at all, and then towards the end of the volume to feel her "despair turn into beauty." Of course, Sinclair's poems themselves are the proof that language does ultimately matter to her. For those familiar with the richness of Romanian literature, there are moments when Sinclair's words might seem directly inspired by Nina Cassian, E. M. Cioran, and Eugène Ionesco. A Journey through Knowledge: Festschrift in Honour of Hortensia Pârlog is a collection of articles dedicated to one of the best known Romanian university teachers and linguists, both in her home country and well beyond its borders. The heterogenous material (both in terms of the range of issues tackled and in terms of the approaches adopted by the authors) in the three sections of the volume finds itself a common denominator in the idea of “traveling” and “journey”, around which they are organized. In the first section, Traveling across Identities and Emotions, Pia Brînzeu touches upon some identity issues, in dealing with a form of subversion in Coz Shakespeare, by Marin Sorescu; Jaques Ramel argues against the opinion that Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream was written to be performed as an epithalamium during wedding ceremonies; Adolphe Haberer brings to the fore the non-hero features of the main character in Virginia Woolf’s Jacob’s Room; Liliane Louvel writes about the mirror in literary texts, insisting on its potential to send back graphic reflections onto these texts; and Maurizio Gotti discusses definitional criteria, i.e., the principles according to which a term should be defined. In section two, Traveling in Time and Space, Slávka Tomaščíková speaks about the status, functions and characteristics of media narrative discourse during the last decade; Aleksandra Kedzierska follows and characterizes various types of journeys in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, highlighting their significance for celebration; Alberto Lázaro traces the changes that medieval stories, abundant in sexual references and instances of adultery, have suffered to meet the publication requirements during Franco’s regime in Spain; Stephen Tapscott focuses on the relationship between contemporary American poets’ lyric and previously written works (especially Modernist); while Fernando Galván examines a number of literary texts centering on cities that have been dreamed of or imagined by various writers, to illustrate decay, deconstruction and regeneration. The third section, Traveling between Languages and Cultures, opens with Smiljana Komar’s account of the translation of some frequent English discourse markers into Slovene and continues with Loredana Pungă’s illustration of the issue of loss and gain in translation. Irma Taavitsainen and Päivi Pahta highlight the functions of the English politeness marker please, pliis in Finnish, and investigate whether and how its meanings have changed when it has been adopted into the host language. Lachlan Mackenzie’s contribution rounds off the volume with some suggestions on how recent changes in the English language should be taken into consideration when teachers of English evaluate the linguistic performance of their students.

'Poems of Light' ('Poemele Luminii') was published in 1919 by the Romanian poet Lucian Blaga (1895-1961). Blaga is considered to be one of the most important modernist poets in Romania, greatly admired by internationally renowned writers such as Mircea Eliade, yet he is still relatively unknown outside his country. It is generally considered that this is due to the Communist government's censorship of his work, as he, a poet and essayist who refused any connections to the Party, was deemed to be too 'philosophical' and subversive for his time. This particular collection, consisting of 38 poems, is his earliest published work, written just after his marriage and dedicated to his wife. Blaga's style sits somewhere between a Romantic sensibility and an ironic modernist distrust - his poems explore love, spirituality and nature with sensitivity and wonder, yet the poetic persona constantly questions them. Poems such as 'The oak tree' and 'The earth' follow the Romantic convention of portraying a persona who wants to connect with nature, yet instead of it providing a sense of comfort and stability, nature is transformed into a reminder of our mortality and isolation. When faced with a natural world in which he feels alienated, the persona looks for meaning and intensity in romantic relationships, reminiscent of Matthew Arnold's 'Dover Beach' where the poet (like Blaga, also newly wed), demanded that he and his love 'be true to one another' in order to find some stability amongst 'the naked shingles of the world'. Poems such as 'The earth', 'Your hair', 'Beautiful hands' and 'Us, and the earth', presumably addressed to his new wife, communicate this romantic desire for a perfect union, yet they too contain the shadow of mortality, alluding to love's transience. However, in poems such as 'I do not crush the aura of wonder of the world', 'I await my sunset' and 'Silence', there still lingers the Romantic hope that the spirit can connect to a greater universal power, however distant and uncertain. This is a new translation of 'Poemele Luminii' by Gabi Reigh. Reigh (nee Jianu) moved to England from Romania in her teens, studied English and History of Art at University College London and currently teaches English Language and Literature at a sixth form college in Hampshire. In 2017, she won the Stephen Spender Trust award for her translation from Romanian of Marin Sorescu's poem 'The Traveller'. Her work has also been published in the literary magazine 'Modern Poetry in Translation'.
