Grob's Opening, or Grob's Attack, is characterized by the move 1.g4 where White immediately moves the king knight pawn two squares.]. It is a very unusual and rare opening, but occasionally played by masters and grandmasters. This opening was pioneered by the Swiss International Master Henri Grob (1904-1974). He analyzed it extensively, played it in hundreds of correspondence games, and wrote a book about the opening. This is the 4th in Bill Wall's Unusual Chess Opening Series! It contains many tactical traps with good attacking chances for both sides. At the master level, the Grob is considered inferior and is rarely employed in serious competition. However, masters and grandmasters have played it in blitz tournaments for its surprise value.The Grob has also been played in several correspondence events. It is the task of this book to bring together decisive and practical games beginning with 1.g4. This book is a collection of over 600 games using the Grob's Opening as White. Slight annotations have been added to each game where improvements or mistakes could have been made. Chess diagrams have been added at critical positions in some of the more interesting games. This collection is part of my unusual opening series from less analyzed and played openings. I have tried to select the most entertaining games. Enjoy

The Orangutan Opening (1.b4) is also more commonly known as the Polish Opening or Sokolsky's Opening. The Orangutan got its name after the Polish player Savielly Tartakower (1887-1956) visited the Bronx Zoo during the 1924 New York International Tournament. He was impressed by an orangutan named Suzanna at the zoo and decided to dedicate his next game to her. Tartakower noted that the climbing motion of the pawn to b4 and to b5 reminded him of the orangutan. In round 4, Tartakower played 1.b4 against Géza Maróczy (1870-1951) and drew after 57 moves.In 1903, Nikolai Bugayev (1837-1903), a prominent Russian mathematician, published his analyses of this opening in the Russian magazine Shakmatnoye Obozreniyi. In the 1930s, Soviet master Alexei Pavlovich Sokolsky (1908-1969) began analyzing and playing this opening in the USSR. In 1953, Sokolsky defeated grandmaster Salo Flohr (1908-1983) in Moscow with this opening. In 1963, he published his opening monograph Debyut 1.b2-b4.The idea of this irregular opening is for White to fianchetto his queen bishop onto the b2 square to control the a1-h8 diagonal. White also tries to prevent Black from expanding on the queenside as White gains mire spatial advantage on the queenside. Black has many options to control the center and start his own attack. Both sides have many tactical threats and good attacking chances.This book has 500 illustrative and decisive games based on the opening 1.b4. Slight annotations have been added to each game. Diagrams have been added to the most critical positions of some interesting games. Owen's Opening (1.e3 b6), also known as the Queen's Fianchetto Defense or Greek Defense, is an uncommon and unusual chess defense for Black. It is characterized by a very early fianchetto of the Black queen bishop. The defense can be played against virtually any opening move by White. By 1996 Claude Bloodgood was rated 2702 and was the second highest rated chess player in the United States, behind only Gata Kamsky, who was the US Champion and was playing a match against Anatoly Karpov for the World Chess Championship.Many people including myself accused Bloodgood of manipulating the rating system. For example, it was widely believed that when a new chess player would enter the prison system, Bloodgood and the other players would lose games to this new player giving him a high rating. Once the high rating was established, then the new player would start losing, raising everybody else's rating.This sort of crude manipulation would not have worked in Bloodgood's case because of the large number of players in the Virginia prison system. Others have tried this and have been caught.Bloodgood did not manipulate the rating system. His games were legitimate. His rating rose to astronomical levels because of a flaw in the system.When the rating system was started in 1950, every player who got an even score of 6-6 in the 1950 US Open was assigned a rating of 2000.That was the starting point. Players rated over 2100 were classified as experts, over 2300 were masters, over 2500 were Senior Masters and over 2700 were grandmasters.Within about two years, it was noticed that everybody's rating was dropping. The only two players over 2700, Reshevsky and Fine, had lost those ratings.
