Complex variables are arbitrary complex numbers, and you need to know how they work if you want to learn an important area of mathematics. David C. Kay, a longtime college professor who has written several books geared for college students, explains what complex variables are and how to use them in this textbook written for those with a working knowledge of algebra and calculus. You'll review basic concepts from calculus and gradually discover more sophisticated ideas, such as differentiation and integration in complex variables, which are clearly explained with numerical examples. Other topics include infinite series of complex variables, uniform convergence, the Taylor and Laurent series, and methods for evaluating difficult integrals. Charts, tables, and drawings throughout the book make even tough concepts easy to understand, and problems have been carefully crafted to cover the main concepts while maintaining your interest. Whether you're an educator seeking to provide an additional resource for your students or a student seeking a self-help guide to understand complex variables, this basic course is a refreshing treatment that can be a stand-alone tutorial or companion guide to another textbook.

This carefully written textbook is an introduction to the beautiful concepts and results of complex analysis. It is intended for international bachelor and master programmes in Germany and throughout Europe; in the Anglo-American system of university education the content corresponds to a beginning graduate course. The book presents the fundamental results and methods of complex analysis and applies them to a study of elementary and non-elementary functions (elliptic functions, Gamma- and Zeta function including a proof of the prime number theorem ...) and – a new feature in this context! – to exhibiting basic facts in the theory of several complex variables. Part of the book is a translation of the authors’ German text “Einführung in die komplexe Analysis”; some material was added from the by now almost “classical” text “Funktionentheorie” written by the authors, and a few paragraphs were newly written for special use in a master’s programme.

The calculus of real numbers can be extended to complex numbers, where the definitions and techniques one learns in calculus carry over to complex variables. David C. Kay, who has written several books geared for college students, explains this development in his new book. A short review of basic concepts from real variable calculus appears with each new topic. Differentiation and integration in complex variables is clearly explained, with numerical examples. A Comprehensive Course in Analysis by Poincaré Prize winner Barry Simon is a five-volume set that can serve as a graduate-level analysis textbook with a lot of additional bonus information, including hundreds of problems and numerous notes that extend the text and provide important historical background. Depth and breadth of exposition make this set a valuable reference source for almost all areas of classical analysis. Part 2B provides a comprehensive look at a number of subjects of complex analysis not included in Part 2A. Presented in this volume are the theory of conformal metrics (including the Poincaré metric, the Ahlfors-Robinson proof of Picard's theorem, and Bell's proof of the Painlevé smoothness theorem), topics in analytic number theory (including Jacobi's two- and four-square theorems, the Dirichlet prime progression theorem, the prime number theorem, and the Hardy-Littlewood asymptotics for the number of partitions), the theory of Fuschian differential equations, asymptotic methods (including Euler's method, stationary phase, the saddle-point method, and the WKB method), univalent functions (including an introduction to SLE), and Nevanlinna theory. The chapters on Fuschian differential equations and on asymptotic methods can be viewed as a minicourse on the theory of special functions.

The Geometric Theory Of Complex Variables written by Peter V. Dovbush and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-01-28 with Mathematics categories.

This book provides the reader with a broad introduction to the geometric methodology in complex analysis. It covers both single and several complex variables, creating a dialogue between the two viewpoints. Regarded as one of the 'grand old ladies' of modern mathematics, complex analysis traces its roots back 500 years. The subject began to flourish with Carl Friedrich Gauss's thesis around 1800. The geometric aspects of the theory can be traced back to the Riemann mapping theorem around 1850, with a significant milestone achieved in 1938 with Lars Ahlfors's geometrization of complex analysis. These ideas inspired many other mathematicians to adopt this perspective, leading to the proliferation of geometric theory of complex variables in various directions, including Riemann surfaces, Teichmüller theory, complex manifolds, extremal problems, and many others. This book explores all these areas, with classical geometric function theory as its main focus. Its accessible and gentle approach makes it suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students seeking to understand the connections among topics usually scattered across numerous textbooks, as well as experienced mathematicians with an interest in this rich field.

Part 2A is devoted to basic complex analysis. It interweaves three analytic threads associated with Cauchy, Riemann, and Weierstrass, respectively. Cauchy's view focuses on the differential and integral calculus of functions of a complex variable, with the key topics being the Cauchy integral formula and contour integration. For Riemann, the geometry of the complex plane is central, with key topics being fractional linear transformations and conformal mapping. For Weierstrass, the power series is king, with key topics being spaces of analytic functions, the product formulas of Weierstrass and Hadamard, and the Weierstrass theory of elliptic functions. Subjects in this volume that are often missing in other texts include the Cauchy integral theorem when the contour is the boundary of a Jordan region, continued fractions, two proofs of the big Picard theorem, the uniformization theorem, Ahlfors's function, the sheaf of analytic germs, and Jacobi, as well as Weierstrass, elliptic functions.

A brand new appendix by Oscar Garcia-Prada graces this third edition of a classic work. In developing the tools necessary for the study of complex manifolds, this comprehensive, well-organized treatment presents in its opening chapters a detailed survey of recent progress in four areas: geometry (manifolds with vector bundles), algebraic topology, differential geometry, and partial differential equations. Wells’s superb analysis also gives details of the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations on Kahler manifolds, Griffiths's period mapping, quadratic transformations, and Kodaira's vanishing and embedding theorems. Oscar Garcia-Prada’s appendix gives an overview of the developments in the field during the decades since the book appeared.

This book is an outgrowth of lectures given on several occasions at Chalmers University of Technology and Goteborg University during the last ten years. As opposed to most introductory books on complex analysis, this one as sumes that the reader has previous knowledge of basic real analysis. This makes it possible to follow a rather quick route through the most fundamen tal material on the subject in order to move ahead to reach some classical highlights (such as Fatou theorems and some Nevanlinna theory), as well as some more recent topics (for example, the corona theorem and the HI_ BMO duality) within the time frame of a one-semester course. Sections 3 and 4 in Chapter 2, Sections 5 and 6 in Chapter 3, Section 3 in Chapter 5, and Section 4 in Chapter 7 were not contained in my original lecture notes and therefore might be considered special topics. In addition, they are completely independent and can be omitted with no loss of continuity. The order of the topics in the exposition coincides to a large degree with historical developments. The first five chapters essentially deal with theory developed in the nineteenth century, whereas the remaining chapters contain material from the early twentieth century up to the 1980s. Choosing methods of presentation and proofs is a delicate task. My aim has been to point out connections with real analysis and harmonic anal ysis, while at the same time treating classical complex function theory.

This book is ideal for a one-semester course for advanced undergraduate students and first-year graduate students in mathematics. It is a straightforward and coherent account of a body of knowledge in complex analysis, from complex numbers to Cauchy's integral theorems and formulas to more advanced topics such as automorphism groups, the Schwarz problem in partial differential equations, and boundary behavior of harmonic functions. The book covers a wide range of topics, from the most basic complex numbers to those that underpin current research on some aspects of analysis and partial differential equations. The novelty of this book lies in its choice of topics, genesis of presentation, and lucidity of exposition.
