Sherman called him "That devil, Forrest" and "the most remarkable man our Civil War produced on either side." Bruce Catton rated him "one of the authentic military geniuses of the whole war." And Grant said, "For the particular kind of warfare which Forrest had carried on neither army could present a more effective officer." Not only does A Battle from the Start describe Forrest's incredible and dramatic feats on the battlefield, it covers his childhood and youth as the oldest son of a poor farmer on the Mississippi frontier, who took over responsibility for the family's survival as a young boy when his father died, and his later move to Memphis, where he became a millionaire in the slave trade. It describes Forrest's life after the war: his acceptance of the defeat of the Southern cause rather than defiant flight to foreign shores, his declining business fortunes, his deteriorating health from a body worn down by the war's rigors, and his premature death. - Jacket flap.

To Start A War written by Robert Draper and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-28 with Political Science categories.

One of BookPage's Best Books of 2020 “The detailed, nuanced, gripping account of that strange and complex journey offered in Robert Draper’s To Start a War: How the Bush Administration Took America Into Iraq is essential reading—now, especially now . . . Draper’s account [is] one for the ages . . . A must-read for all who care about presidential power.” —The Washington Post From the author of the New York Times bestseller Dead Certain comes the definitive, revelatory reckoning with arguably the most consequential decision in the history of American foreign policy--the decision to invade Iraq. Even now, after more than fifteen years, it is hard to see the invasion of Iraq through the cool, considered gaze of history. For too many people, the damage is still too palpable, and still unfolding. Most of the major players in that decision are still with us, and few of them are not haunted by it, in one way or another. Perhaps it's that combination, the passage of the years and the still unresolved trauma, that explains why so many protagonists opened up so fully for the first time to Robert Draper. Draper's prodigious reporting has yielded scores of consequential new revelations, from the important to the merely absurd. As a whole, the book paints a vivid and indelible picture of a decision-making process that was fatally compromised by a combination of post-9/11 fear and paranoia, rank naïveté, craven groupthink, and a set of actors with idées fixes who gamed the process relentlessly. Everything was believed; nothing was true. The intelligence failure was comprehensive. Draper's fair-mindedness and deep understanding of the principal actors suffuse his account, as does a storytelling genius that is close to sorcery. There are no cheap shots here, which makes the ultimate conclusion all the more damning. In the spirit of Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August and Marc Bloch's Strange Defeat, To Start A War will stand as the definitive account of a collective process that arrived at evidence that would prove to be not just dubious but entirely false, driven by imagination rather than a quest for truth--evidence that was then used to justify a verdict that led to hundreds of thousands of deaths and a flood tide of chaos in the Middle East that shows no signs of ebbing.

Discover the remarkable history of the Battle of Bunker Hill... In every war, there are those battles that mark a turning point, after which everything is different. These are the battles that help determine how the war will proceed. The Battle of Bunker Hill was one of those battles in the American Revolutionary War. While it was a battle that the American rebels lost, it was significant because it showed that a rag-tag band of civilian soldiers could in fact stand up to the best trained and most experienced military in the world at that time. Despite losing the battle, the American colonists managed to repulse the British advances twice before finally running out of ammunition during the third assault. Additionally, they killed or injured over 1,000 British soldiers as compared to only suffering a little over 400 casualties among their own ranks. It came as a surprise to the British who had gone into the battle supremely confident that they would easily win. They didn't count on the spirit of the colonial rebels who were, by that time, committed to the fight. The Battle of Bunker Hill changed the entire tone of the American Revolutionary War--from that point forward, the British knew they were in for a long, difficult fight, and the colonists had the confidence they needed to declare their independence from Great Britain and establish their own new country, the United States of America. Memoirs Of World War I written by William Mitchell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1960 with World War, 1914-1918 categories.

"In this first complete version of a serial originally run in Liberty in 1928, General ""Billy"" Mitchell tells his own story of the first World War. Sent to Spain on a military mission in 1916, Mitchell was ordered to join Allied forces in France immediately upon America's entry into the War. Thus he became the first U.S. officer on active duty at the front. The journal he kept was later expanded during leisure time forced on him by his famous court martial. And because the transition was not done in a consciously literary style, much of the brutal impact and immediacy of war stays put. Trench warfare, technical observations, the organization of America's famed ""hat-in-the-ring"" fighter squadron count for much of the contents. And in the manner which was later to annoy so many superiors, Mitchell already begins pounding home the lessons of a new kind of war brought by bomber, tank and submarine. Although Mitchell's comments on the many famous generals around him may hardly be objective, they do shed further light on the personalities which shaped the first of the global conflicts."--Kirkus Reviews.

“[A] brief but well-told and well-researched account . . . a good description of early U.S. Marine deployments to Vietnam” (HistoryNet). The First Battle is a graphic account of the Vietnam War’s first major clash. On August 18, 1965, regiment fought regiment on the Van Tuong Peninsula near the new Marine base at Chu Lai. On the American side were three battalions of Marines under the command of Col. Oscar Peatross, a hero of two previous wars. His opponent was the 1st Viet Cong Regiment commanded by Nguyen Dinh Trong, a veteran of many fights against the French and the South Vietnamese. Codenamed Operation Starlite, this action was a resounding success for the Marines, and its result was cause for great optimism about America’s future in Vietnam. Blood debt, han tu in Vietnamese, can mean revenge, debt of honor, or blood owed for blood spilled. The blood debt came into Vietnamese usage early in the war with the United States. With this battle, the Johnson Administration began compiling its own blood debt, this one to the American people. The book also looks at the ongoing conflict between the US Army and the US Marines about the methodology of the Vietnam War. With decades of experience with insurrection and rebellion, the Marines were institutionally oriented to base the struggle on pacification of the population. The Army, on the other hand, having largely trained to meet the Soviet Army on the plains of Germany, opted for search-and-destroy missions against Communist main force units. The history of the Vietnam War is littered with many “what ifs.” This may be the biggest of them.
