A NEW YORKER BOOK OF THE YEAR 'Gorgeous ... intense ... shimmering ... [an] unforgettable collection' Observer 'Beautiful, sensuous and plural ... a vital and visceral collection. Breathtaking' Joelle Taylor, author of C+nto & Othered Poems 'Brave ... this striking collection ... articulates the unspeakable from various angles ... often nightmarish and dark, there are moments of shimmering release ... an auspicious debut' Seán Hewitt, Irish Times '[A] powerful debut ... marshals narrative lyrics and stark beauty' The New York Times Book Review 'Vivid ... searingly honest, beautifully told depictions of survival and self-love' Publishers Weekly 'A testament to queer self-love ... a monument to [what] persists' them.us 'A true masterwork ... an exquisitely crafted labyrinth of a book' Electric Literature This is a book about survival. This is a book about love. Visceral and astonishing, Paul Tran's debut poetry collection, All the Flowers Kneeling, charts the rebuilding of a self in the wake of extremity. How, it asks, can we reimagine what we have been given in order to make something new: an identity, a family, a life, a dream? These rich, resonant poems of desire, freedom, control and rebirth reach back into the past - the tale of Scheherazade, US imperial violence, a shattering history of personal abuse - to show how it both scars and transforms. Innovative poetic forms mirror the nonlinear experiences of trauma survivors, while ambitious sequences probe our systems of knowledge-making and the power of storytelling as survival. At once virtuosic and vulnerable, confessional and profoundly defiant, All the Flowers Kneeling revels in rediscovering and reconfiguring the self, and ultimately becomes an essential testament to the human capacities for resilience, endurance and love.

My Dear Will you ever know Who the woman inside will be What story that she will tell What steps will she take And what path would she create What is her purpose and passion Which is far greater than anything She could imagine or Ever knew she would be She knew she had words Words to inspire Words to heal humanity She knows now That she is me Dawn What motivated/inspired you to write this book? “I actually was thinking about my past and how it influenced my present time in life. I began to think about the times that my mother would take me in the neighborhood and she and the beautiful ladies would talk about life. Within those talks they would sometimes say My Dear… and give me words of wisdom and knowledge for when I would become a young adult and woman. Those words stuck with me and have helped me along my journey of life. It was within the elders of the community that I began to understand how life would move forward in stages. That we are a part of a bigger picture and that our dreams a part of the process of life. Each one was preparing me for life in such a beautiful way.”

My earliest recollection of writing poetry is in fourth grade. Our class teacher was out that day and instead of being one of the noise makers, I discovered something new and fascinating; a way of expression using words. Words just flowed into my mind and hand and I wrote them down on paper. It was thrilling! The words were beautiful; something I had not experienced before. So beautiful the class prefect and the rest of the kids dubbed it a love letter because they could not comprehend such arrangement of words as we had not been taught poetry. Their taunting me lead to my name being written on the noise makers list...to be flogged! This experience thus imprinted on my mind my discovery of the beauty of words! The poems in this collection were written in my teens. I encourage children and young adults to write because I believe that their sight and purity are not yet jaded by cynicisms, other isms, ills, bills, and being awakened to the "real" journey of life. As you read these poems put yourself into that young age and see what I was seeing; then observe from where you are now. These poems were my observations of life, relationships, love, nature and God. Later in life, I wrote more poetry and will publish those under another volume. These poems were first published under the title "My Husband is a Cuckoo and Other Poems of my Youth," one of the poems in the book. (A Cuckoo is a bird that lays its eggs in another bird's nest, so the other bird incubates and hashes the eggs for her). Enjoy!
