This book critically examines the tenets of Calvinism and constructs a Bible-based argument to refute the belief. It discusses each of Calvinism's five points. It defines four very unique criteria that can be used to show that the belief is incorrect. The first criterion is that a person does not have to know the name of Jesus to be saved. In discussing that criterion the relationship aspect of salvation is examined. The second criterion is that God did not speak out loud to the Old Testament saints once Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden. The third criterion is that God tries equally hard to save everyone. In discussing that criterion the importance of General Revelation is examined. The fourth criterion is that God is still sovereign even though He lets people choose to come to Him or to not come to Him. The book concludes by refuting each of the five points of Calvinism with a special focus on the established four criteria and the verses that are normally used to defend the belief.

In this volume I reply to biblical arguments from John Calvin in Books I-III of his "Institutes of the Christian Religion," in instances where he takes a position that is contrary to Catholic theology. Taking on John Calvin's exegetical arguments in this fashion will, it is hoped, demonstrate the persistent fallacies and falsehoods (from the Catholic perspective) that are frequently found in his writing, and illustrate at least some ways to refute and overcome them. Catholics regard Calvinists and other Protestants as brethren in Christ, and rejoice over the many important beliefs that we hold in common. At the same time, the Catholic apologist's task is to answer objections to Catholicism that arise in these quarters, and to present what we feel are superior alternative opinions. I use the public domain translation of the "Institutes" by Henry Beveridge (Calvin Translation Society, 1845, from the 1559 Latin edition). Many sincere, Bible-believing Christians are Calvinists only by default. Thinking that the only choice is between Calvinism (with its presumed doctrine of eternal security) and Arminianism (with its teaching that salvation can be lost), and confident of Christ's promise to keep eternally those who believe in Him, they therefore consider themselves to be Calvinists. It takes only a few simple questions to discover that most Christians are largely unaware of what John Calvin and his early followers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries actually believed and practiced. Nor do they fully understand what most of today's leading Calvinists believe.
