Old And Middle English Language Studies written by Matsuji Tajima and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988-01-01 with Reference categories.

Since the publication of Kennedy's monumental Bibliography of Writings on the English Language, no bibliography has systematically surveyed the Old and Middle English scholarship accumulated over the past 60 years. Tajima's work aims to meet the need for an updated bibliography of Old and Middle English language studies; it lists books, monographs, dissertations, articles, notes, and reviews on Old and Middle English language. The items have been listed into fourteen fairly broad categories: (1) Bibliographies, (2) Dictionaries, glossaries and concordances, (3) Histories of the English language, (4) Grammars (historical, Old English and Middle English), (5) General and miscellaneous studies, (6) Language of individual authors or works, (7) Orthography and punctuation, (8) Phonology and phonetics, (9) Morphology, (10) Syntax, (11) Lexicology, lexicography and word-formation, (12) Onomastics, (13) Dialectology, (14) Stylistics.

In the 19th century, education became accessible to much wider circles of society in a great number and variety of schools and the teaching of grammar came to be obligatory from 1870/72 with the advent of general education. Whereas these general trends of the 19th century are well-known to scholars working in different disciplines of social history, and the history of education in particular, it is still true that major sections of the evidence are largely uncollected. This is especially so for school books: there is virtually a gap between the 18th century and the present grammatical tradition. This bibliography lists some 1930 works on English grammar published in the 19th century, mainly in Britain and the US, half of which are accompanied by short descriptions of their physical make-up, content and affiliation.

Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of the English Language The substance of the following chapters was delivered, in the form of County Council lectures, in London during the sessions 1907-9, and subsequently at the Summer School, St. Andrew's. It is hoped that the book will serve to introduce students of English to the somewhat neglected background of their studies. In the interest of these a certain amount of specialised material has been introduced, without, it is hoped, impairing the readableness of the book for the general public. The bibliography is more extended than the size of the book warrants, but may serve, perhaps, as a guide for future reading. Special reference is made to the work of Darmesteter, Jespersen, Luick, Paul, and Wyld, apart from which the preparation of this book would have been impossible. The author is under obligation to his wife for valuable help in the arrangement of the index, and to Dr. R. B. McKerrow for assistance and advice. The Study Of History written by and has been published by Manchester University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988 with Historiography categories.

The chief objective of this text is to provide a handy reference guide for teachers, students and researchers of modern European economic and social history. Since the bibliography covers only works written in the English language it will probably be of less use to the last named group, at least insofar as those within it are already seasoned researchers on a particular country or topic. However, it would have been quite impossible from the point of view of length to have included all the literature in foreign languages, while to have done so would have defeated the essential aim of the volume, namely that of providing a reasonably convenient guide for those who teach and study the subject but who are not primarily specialists in the field.
