Excerpt from A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, Vol. 4 of 4: With a Supplemental Volume, Continuing the Biographies to the Present Time Melville, Andrew, one of the most illustrious of the Scottish reformers, whose name stands next to that of Knox in the history of the Reformation, and is second to none in the erudition of the time, was born on the 1st of August, 1545, at Baldovy or Baldowy, an estate on the banks of the South Esk, near Montrose, of which his father was proprietor. The form in which the family name was generally known at that time in Scotland and in foreign countries, was Melvyne or Melvin. Throughout the interesting correspondence, written in Latin, between the subject of this memoir and his amiable and accomplished nephew, whoso life is recorded in the next article, the name is uniformly written Melvinus. In Fifeshire, at the present day, the name is commonly pronounced Melvin, and at an earlier period it was frequently both pronounced and written Melin, Mellin, and Melling. The Melvilles of Baldowy were a family of some note in the middle of the sixteenth century, and near cadets of Melville of Raith, who was considered to be the chief of an influential name in the county of Fife. Melville of Dysart, however, was acknowledged by Andrew Melville to have been the chief of the Baldowy branch of the family. Andrew was the youngest of nine sons, and had the misfortune to lose his father, who fell in the battle of Pinkie, while be was yet only two years of age. The death of his mother, also, soon afterwards took place, and he was thus left an orphan. The loss of his parents, however, was in a great measure compensated by the kindness and tenderness of his eldest brother, and the wife of that individual, both of whom watched over his infant years with the most anxious affection and assiduity. The long-tried and unwearied kindness of the latter, in particular, made a strong impression upon Melville, which lasted during the whole of his life. His brother, perceiving his easily propensity to learning, resolved to encourage it, and with this view gave him the best education which the country afforded. He was besides of a weakly habit of body, a consideration which had its weight in determining the line of life he should pursue. Young Melville was accordingly put to the grammar-school of Montrose, where he acquired the elements of the Latin language, and, among other accomplishments, a knowledge of Greek, which was then a rare study in Scotland. When removed, in his fourteenth year, to the university of St Andrews, he surprised his teachers by his knowledge of Greek, with which they were wholly unacquainted. Excerpt from A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, Vol. 5 of 4: With a Supplemental Volume, Continuing the Biographies to the Present Time While a national Biography is so fitted to ari est the general attention, and endear itself to the patriotic feelings of those people whose great and good men it commemorates, a national Scottish Biography possesses such advantages of this nature, as must always impart to it an especial interest. For it exhibits a country the least populous in Europe, and originally the most remote and neglected, producing, in spite of these disadvantages, such a multitude of leading minds in every department of thoixght and action, as have advanced it into the very foremost rank of nations, and given it an imperishable name in history. The men by whom such a change has been achieved must have left a memorial of no ordinary importance. Something more, however, than a merely intellectual and historical interest belongs, in a peculiar degree, to Scottish Biography. Those men of whom it is the record, were in most instances of humble origin and scanty resources men who were obliged not only skilfully to use, but in many cases absolutely to create the means by which they were boz ne onward and who yet, by their talents, their energy, and their moral worth, won their way to eminence in every department of human excellence. While patriotism is ennobled and purified by the study of such examples, how persuasive a lesson they contain for the ingenuous youths by whom the manliood of Scotland in a few years will be represented! It is by such reading that they can best be taught by the example of such precursors that they will be best animated and dii ected. In these instances they have full proof, that however adverse their own circumstances are, everything may be compelled to give way to indomitable resolution, unwearing industry, and steady upright integrity. A full national Biography for Scotland, from the earliest period till 1834, was accomplished by the work, the publication of which was completed dui ing that year, under the title of Lives op Illustrious and Distinguished Scotsmen, of which the first four volumes of the present is a re issue. But since the period of its first publication, circumstances have occurred, through which a large addition to the original collection was ui gently demanded. Excerpt from A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, Vol. 2 of 4 Having thus cleared the path to the ancient authorities, we come, for the first time, to consider who and what the Admi rable Crichton really was. The ac count which we have already given of his birth, parentage, and success at the university, we hold to be authentic; and to that part, therefore, of the biography we have no occasion to refer. Of the matters spoken of by Urquhart upon his own authority, we have said enough, and they come not within the sphere of such investigation. Excerpt from A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, Vol. 3 of 4: Division V, Horner Lesley Although defeated in their struggle, the appearance which Mr Horner made in it, was so highly respectable as to deepen the impression which his talents and knowledge had already made on the house and from this period he appears to have exercised very considerable influence with all parties. Indeed, the urbanity of his manners, and the moderation with which he pressed his own views, were such as secured for him the respect, at least, of those from whom he differed in opinion and while steadily and consistently supporting the party to which he belonged, he displayed a Spirit of tolerance towards his Opponents which totally subdued any thing like personal animosity on their part. His efforts were then often more successful than those of more gifted men, who, with greater talents, have nevertheless greater prejudice, frequently amounting to personal dislike, to struggle against. It has been supposed that had Mr Homer been in parliament after the death of Mr Ponsonby, he would have become the leader of the Opposition. But for an honour so great as this, providence had not destined him. Constant application to business and the increasing weight and multiplicity of his engagements, at last overpowered a constitution which never was very strong. Indications Of pulmonary consumption soon appeared, and immediate removal to a warmer climate was deemed necessary by his physi cians. Crossing, therefore, to the continent, he passed through France and entered Italy; but the seeds of mortal disease had begun to spring before he took farewell of his own country, and he expired at Pisa, on the 8th of F ebru ary, 1817, in the 38th year of his age. His remains were interred in the Pro testant burying-ground at Leghorn, which also contains the ashes Of Smollett. On the occasion of a new writ being moved for the borough of St Mawes, which Mr Horner had represented, the character of the deceased member was elegantly sketched by lord Morpeth, and eloquent and affecting tributes of respect paid to his memory by several of the most distinguished members Of the house.
