Excerpt from A New Book of Old Ballads The chief attraction of the present Collection consists in the recovery of early versions of two or three popular Scotish Ballads, which, passing through the barberous hands of Allan Ramsay or other renovators of ancient garments, have, like the silk stocking of Sir John Cutlar, retained very few portions of their original texture. Thus "Scornful," (termed by Ramsay "Bonny") Nancy, is essentially different from the song introduced to the notice of the public in the Tea-Table Miscellany, and the recovery of the original ballad establishes, in spite of Mr Stenhouse's observations to the contrary, that the lady had not escaped intact from the poets embraces. Excerpt from Old Ballads in Prose The story-loving people would have hadrather a hard time if it had not been for the ballads. These ballads were simple rhymes, and every one of them told a story. There were tales of ghosts and fairies, of merry jests and faithful maidens and gallant champions, of the wild escapades of Robin Hood and his fol lowers in the depths of Sherwood Forest; and there were tales with the ring of battle and the clash of arms in them, with a sword in every line. No one knows who composed the ballads, and it is not at all likely that any one of them was the work of a single person. When peo ple sang them, they sang what they remem bered, and made up the rest; so that they were seldom sung alike twice. By and by, they were printed on single sheets of coarse paper. In country houses they were often pasted on the walls of the bedrooms. Some people felt a little scorn for the ballads be cause they were so simple and unpolished, but Addison said, I cannot, for my Heart, leave a Room before I have thoroughly studied the walls of it, and examined the several printed Papers which are usually pasted upon them.
