A Bouquet of Fairy Tales tells stories about the following plants: tulips, thistles, roses, pussy willows, lilies of the valley and poison ivy. The first tale, The Tulip Palace, is the story of a terrible young king who learns his lesson from a wise old, crafty magician and a beautiful butterfly. The second tale, The Silver Thistle, tells the story of Margery, who looked like a thistle and how a greedy, wicked old man caused her kindness to vanish from the earth. The Red Rose is the story of a beautiful maiden who spoke with musical words sounding like songs. It tells how she disappeared in the snow on her eighteenth birthday and why rose bushes now have thorns. The Pussy Willow tale goes back to when the world was ruled by cats. A happy time for cats was a terrible time for mice, who organized to prevent becoming extinct and rid the world of the cat kingdom. This is the story of how they saved mice forever. The Lily of the Valley story took place in the Middle Kingdom of Angr where the people worshipped the Goddess of Despair. A girl named Lily came to live there from the Lower Kingdom of St. Cyr in the Middleterranean Ocean. The tiny bell-shaped flowers grew close to the earth and helped Joy invade the Angr kingdom. See how this happened. In Poison Ivy a very mean and angry queen hated her daughter-in-law, Trinka because she was a commoner, until she was tricked by Trinka’s pet salamander. When the queen died her spirit turned her into poison ivy as punishment for her years of cruelty and when people now see poison ivy, they always jump away from the plant.

Where have all the flowers gone? They’re dancing up a storm in this whimsical, wondrous rendition of a well-known fairy tale, created by the one and only David Ellwand. For hours beneath the velvet sky they dance without a care, Until the clock chimes midnight . . . then she’s no longer there! Just a single lily petal and her fragrance in the air. One magic night, a poor cinder girl is granted an impossible wish. It may be the most familiar of tales, but under the inimitable wand of David Ellwand, this timeless story blooms as never before. Here, the innocent heroine is a delicate flower, a lily whose faded petals spring to new life as she arrives at the Sultan’s ball in a butterfly-drawn coach. When the smitten Prince sets out in search of the shy, retiring flower who has vanished into thin air, leaving but a petal behind, it’s clear that Cinderlily’s comically garish, pansy-faced stepsisters won’t stand a chance. With singular vision, humor, and a touch of computer magic, David Ellwand directs a delightfully expressive cast of flowers in a breathtaking production sure to enchant lovers of fairy tales - and lovers of flowers, too.

Flower Fairy Tales of the Language of Flowers are taken from The Flowers Personified (1847), a strange, delightful book. It tells the stories of the flowers' lives after The Flower Fairy allowed them to become human. The Flower Fairy was displeased that the flowers wanted to leave her to become human. Their tales, for the most part, are not happy. Volume I includes: "The Flower Fairy"-which tells why the flowers wanted to become human; "How The Poet Jacobus Supposed He Had Found A Subject For An Epic Poem: A Summary Of Everything Which The Ancients And Moderns Have Written on the Language of Flowers," including a list of flower names in English, French and Latin with their meaning; and a bonus listing of alphabetical Flower Meanings. The Language of Flowers, an ancient language, is just as subject to misinterpretation and error as any other language. Different cultures have used it throughout history. Flowers and other plants were assigned meanings that people familiar with The Language of Flowers could "read" by knowing the sentiment symbolized by the plant. The combination of flowers in a bouquet and the way they were worn or given to each other held meaning. Hours of the day ("Flora's Clock"), days of the week ("The Floral Week") and the months of the year ("The Calendar of Flora") were also assigned a flower meaning. Coded messages could be exchanged and secret meetings arranged, if you knew the language. There are many Language of Flowers "dictionaries" and they do not all agree on what each flower means. A great resource for baby names, pet names, character names and web IDs.

We are no longer children, — but it is not long since we were; and remembering that golden time, when the sun was brighter, the flowers twice as many, the rivers larger, and everything fairer, than it ever has been since, we welcome this book of fables for children. The writer of them was herself a girl of sixteen when they were written, — many, many years ago, — and of course their chief charm is for younger people than we venerable undergraduates. And the children (whose judgment is best) declare loudly for the book, and listen pleased for hours to the adventures of Lily-Bell and Thistledown and the kind little Ripple. But others also can find a pleasure in the love and knowledge of Nature which the book shows, and in its graceful fancies and sweet lessons of charity and patience. The men and women who write stories for children do a greater work for the world than we are wont to think of. Horace praised poets because they formed the "tender mouth" of children, and turned them from the vile to the beautiful. Miss Alcott does not need to "Claim the shelter from her sire of an immortal name," for she has earned praises for herself.
