Seasons go, Problems arise— Restless nights Taken in stride. Exhaling soul Inhales for comfort— Compensation to questions Long after summer ... —Jeremy Brueske Jeremy Brueske offers a distinctive take on life in his second collection of poems that explores the dynamics of contemporary relationships as well as our current culture. Written with a powerful and elegant style, Brueske’s poems reflect his longing to connect with his great-grandfather, conjure a mesmerizing tale of a Holocaust’s survivor’s chance to create a new identity, and offer a stark, behind-the-curtain glimpse at life as a wayward young man. Included is prose that explores a young man’s night out on the town as he attempts to not only understand the opposite sex, but also who he is and why he is here as well as another young man’s journey of self-reflection as he contemplates his destiny and wonders whether he will ever be able to transform his fantasies into realities. A Brief Crack of Light shares lyrical reflections from a young man with a singular perspective on life, love, culture, and his unique experiences.

You can always count on a murderer for a fancy prose style. It was love at first sight, at last sight, at ever and ever sight.A writer should have the precision of a poet and the imagination of a scientist. The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness. The breaking of a wave cannot explain the whole sea.I think it is all a matter of love; the more you love a memory the stronger and stranger it becomesI confess, I do not believe in time.My loathings are simple: stupidity, oppression, crime, cruelty, soft music.Nothing revives the past so completely as a smell that was once associated with it.Satire is a lesson, parody is a game.

When Lolita was first published in 1955 it created a sensation and established Nabokov as one of the most original prose writers of the twentieth century. This annotated edition, a revised and considerably expanded version of the 1970 edition, does full justice to the textual riches of Lolita, illuminating the elaborate verbal textures and showing how they contribute to the novel's overall meaning. Alfred Appel, Jr. also provides fresh observations on the novel's artifice, games and verbal patternings and a delightful biographical vignette of Nabokov. The annotations themselves were prepared in consultation with Nabokov while newly identified allusions were confirmed by him during the final years of his life.

Autobiographical writings have been a major cultural genre from antiquity to the present time. General questions of the literary as, e.g., the relation between literature and reality, truth and fiction, the dependency of author, narrator, and figure, or issues of individual and cultural styles etc., can be studied preeminently in the autobiographical genre. Yet, the tradition of life-writing has, in the course of literary history, developed manifold types and forms. Especially in the globalized age, where the media and other technological / cultural factors contribute to a rapid transformation of lifestyles, autobiographical writing has maintained, even enhanced, its popularity and importance. By conceiving autobiography in a wide sense that includes memoirs, diaries, self-portraits and autofiction as well as media transformations of the genre, this three-volume handbook offers a comprehensive survey of theoretical approaches, systematic aspects, and historical developments in an international and interdisciplinary perspective. While autobiography is usually considered to be a European tradition, special emphasis is placed on the modes of self-representation in non-Western cultures and on inter- and transcultural perspectives of the genre. The individual contributions are closely interconnected by a system of cross-references. The handbook addresses scholars of cultural and literary studies, students as well as non-academic readers.

Using Vladimir Nabokov as its “case study,” this volume approaches translation as a crucial avenue into literary history and theory, philosophy and interpretation. The book attempts to bring together issues in translation and the shift in Nabokov studies from its earlier emphasis on the “metaliterary” to the more recent “metaphysical” approach. Addressing specific texts (both literary and cinematic), the book investigates Nabokov’s deeply ambivalent relationship to translation as a hermeneutic oscillation on his part between the relative stability of meaning, which expresses itself philosophically as a faith in the beyond, and deep metaphysical uncertainty. While Nabokov’s practice of translation changes profoundly over the course of his career, his adherence to the Romantic notion of a “true” but ultimately elusive metaphysical language remained paradoxically constant.

Dearest Demons presents a collection of poetry marking the end of innocence. We walk the earth never knowing when our time is going to be up, spoiled by good luck for some, forgiven by theology for others until tragedy strikes. These verses explore this unsettling world. From the poignant First Glimpse of Gray, about the inevitability of growing old, to March Madness 2005, recounting all of the horrors that took place that month, Dearest Demons offers a clear-voiced perspective on the untamed beast that is humanity. This collection shares why we must focus on absorbing every second of our existence working through each other's sicknesses, rejoicing in health, redefining happiness, and rekindling the flame when the bonfire burns colder.

The Shadow Of The Second Mother written by Prophecy Coles and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-20 with Psychology categories.

The Shadow of the "Second Mother" explores why has there been such little interest, in psychology, social history and biography, in the important contribution that ‘second mothers’, such as wet nurses and nannies, have had upon the emotional life of the children they have nursed. For the last three thousand years and throughout most civilisations they have nurtured the children of the privileged, and kept alive the abandoned and unwanted child, and yet there has been a profound silence surrounding the influence they may have had. The author explores the lives of several well-known people who have been wet nursed, such as Michelangelo, Rousseau, Jack London, Nabokov and Klein. She speculates that they all were affected emotionally by their ‘second mother’, and concludes that a universal feature of such delegated mothering seems to be that the bond between mother and child is broken, and the child may be left with a life-long distrust of close relationships. In The Shadow of the "Second Mother", Coles combines an exploration of attachment theory with neurology, making it possible to give an explanation as to why these important figures have lain unnamed and ignored in our social and psychological consciousness. This intriguing new approach to an ancient practice will be fascinating reading for psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, sociologist and students of social history.
