The Angels Camp and Copperopolis regions offer a fascinating chapter in the history of the Mother Lode. Calaveras Countys southwest corner has many tales to tell, including one of the earliest settlements of the Native American in California; two of the most famous names in Americana, Mark Twain and Black Bart; and two major events in national history, the Gold Rush and the Civil War. An important Gold Rush town, Angels Camp gained even greater fame through Twains The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, which inspired the world-famous Jumping Frog Jubilee. At the same time, Copperopolis became a critical supplier of copper to the Union during the Civil War. Legendary outlaw Black Bart made his first and his last stagecoach holdup here. Ferries and railways served the region that also included the settlements of Hodson, Milton, Felix, Carson Hill, Dogtown, and Lost City.

This is a chronological account of what happened in 1947 when the Punjab Province of British India was partitioned. The Swedish Research Council awarded a very generous three-year research grant to enable me to carry out the investigation. It is the only comprehensive and complete study of the partition process in the Punjab, beginning with the election campaign of 1945 and culminating in December 1947. It proceeds at two levels, secret British deliberations and decisions and the ground reality in the Punjab. Most time and effort has been devoted to tracing survivors and eyewitnesses from 1947. In some cases I have collected evidence of the same incident from the two opposing sides after 55-63 years. Such a work will never be possible later because the generation on whose testimony it is base will be gone. The partition of the Punjab resulted in the biggest forced migration in history-some 14 million people altogether of which 10 million were from the Punjab. It also resulted in the first major case of ethnic cleansing after the Second World War-on both sides of the divided Punjab unwanted minorities were driven away or killed. Some 500,000 to 800,000 people were killed. It is an unprecedented work and will most certainly become the standard reference on the partition of the Punjab.

Throughout history, the human quest for knowledge of the divine, has ruffled the wings of many an angel, but also tested the wrath of the demon. This book not traces the history of angels and demons from their earliest roots to their modern day renaissance, but also reveals their most intimate secrets. Whether through personal stories, literature, myth, religion or art, this book is the story of how belief in angels and demons has cast a powerful spell over the popular imagination.

Red Dirt is the story of one man's quest for personal knowledge. It is a journey to discover the influences of his homeland on his upbringing, values, and relationships. But it is much, much more. Red Dirt is also the chronicle of an expedition along California's Landscape of Imagination. It is the story of a trip down Highway 49, the fabled roadway that slices through the heart of the Gold Country the Mother Lode, home of the 49ers, the land of dreams. It is the true story of the past, present, and future of one of the most important regions in American Western history. Red Dirt is about who we are and to what we aspire. Red Dirt is about us.
