Excerpt from A Brief Introduction to the Study of Theology This little book contains the substance of lectures which for some time I have been in the habit of delivering to the junior students of the Theological Seminary, Cumberland University. It seemed to me that the publication of such an outline treatment of the science of Theo logical Encyclopedia and Methodology would be not only a matter of interest, but also of advantage, to many undergraduate ministerial students. It is certainly desirable that one should have a map, either in his mind or before him, when one studies geography. It is desirable, also, when one travels upon the high seas, even of theological science, that he should be able to knowhis bearings. Perhaps this brief outline of a great subject may serve some such purpose in behalf of that large and less advanced class of theological readers and stu dents for which it is exclusively intended. Per haps, also, it may serve to enliven and intensify the impression on the part of such readers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Theology The Introduction to the Study of Theology, which is here offered to the public, has been delivered, during the last few sessions, in the form of a course of lectures, to Students of Manchester New College. It is hoped that it will be more serviceable to them in its present shape, and that some few beyond the circle for whom it is more immediately intended will find it of use. Its object is to deal, not with the matter but with the scientific form of Theology, and to bring before the student the nature, method, and mutual relations of the various branches of theological study, so that he may see more clearly the bearing of his labours, and view the several departments of his work, not as incoherent fragments, but as constituent mem bers, each with an appropriate place, in a collective organism which embraces them all. Excerpt from History of the Study of Theology, Vol. 1 The history of the study of Theology is Theological Encyclopaedia placed in its historical frame and order. It traces the study of Theology from the beginning until the present time. There is a study of Theology in all the higher religions. This book does not propose to go beyond the Christian religion. It is the history of the study of Christian Theology. It begins, therefore, with the study of Theology by Jesus Christ and His apostles. Christian Theology may be studied with regard either to its contents or to its forms. The study of the contents of Christian Theology in their historic mould belongs to the department of Church History, as the history of the Christian Religion, of Christian Doctrine, of Christian Institutions, and so on. Theological Encyclopaedia has to do only with the forms of Christian Theology, its methods, the organisation of the various departments of which it is composed, and its literature. The history of the study of Christian Theology is a history of its methods, its disciplines, and its literature. Excerpt from An Introduction to Theology: Its Principles, Its Branches, Its Results, and Its Literature Being, however, an introduction to Theology, it is only a contribution which is made towards a complete exposition. All that this book pretends to do is to show that the various branches of theology are branches of one tree (some almost dead and sterile, and others vigorously alive and fruitful), which, having its root in the nature of man, also breathes its nutriment from the heaven of heavens. And let another remark be made. The treatment of the whole subject is manifestly unequal, so large a part of the whole being devoted to the study Of Biblical Theology. At the moment this inequality is unavoidable: so much more is known of the Bible than of any other branch of theology. Excerpt from History of the Study of Theology, Vol. 2 The palace school was founded by one of the pre decessors of Charlemagne for the training of the sons of princes and nobles. As a court school it moved about with the monarch from place to place. Charlemagne himself was trained there.1 He had some knowledge of Greek as well as Latin, and studied with the grammarian, Peter of Pisa possibly also with Paul the Deacon (t a Benedictine monk and noted Lombard scholar, who taught Greek at his court for a time, and afterwards wrote a history of the Lombards. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the New Testament, Vol. 1 of 2: Critical, Exegetical, and Theological Since the first edition appeared, the chief work on Introduction to the New Testament has been Hilgenfeld's 'Einleitung, ' the outcome of many books and essays published by that indefatigable scholar. His 'Zeit-schrift' also presents valuable critical investigations by the editor himself, Professor Holtzmann, and others, all tending to illustrate the Christian Scriptures. Mangold supplies useful additions to Bleek's ' Introduction.' Professor Reuss's recent publications on the New Testament are somewhat disappointing, savouring as they do of the Vermittelungs-Theologie, and influenced to some extent by a reactionary spirit towards the Tubingen school. Though this school as represented by Baur and Schwegler has carried its speculations too far, the important advance it has made in the criticism of the New Testament cannot be reversed. Modified it may be; but its mark upon early Christian literature is deep and permanent. In correcting its excesses moderation must be carefully preserved, for examples of backwardism are usually weak. A few faults of the 'Tendenz-Kritik' leave its basis secure. Excerpt from Theological Encyclopaedia: A Brief Account of the Organism and Literature of Theology The student who is connected with a Will equipped school of theology may be supposed to have at command suitable means of gu'd ance in the great field of theological study. To one who is deprived of the benefit of such connection some practical suggestions may be serviceable. Even on reading a brief treatise, like that which follows, with its catalogue of theological branches and its appended book lists, some sense of bewilderment may over take him. Having in mind, then, the needs of the student who is left very largely to his own resources, we make bold to offer this list of advices: (i) In the first stage of theolog ical study a preponderant attention may prop erly be given to the Biblical branches. Every student needs to familiarize himself with a good book on Introduction to each Testa ment. Every student needs also to familiarize himself with a good book on the Biblical The ology of the Old Testament and the New Testament respectively. When the debt to these two classes of works has been paid the detailed exegetical study of some of the Biba lical books most vitally related to the Chris tian faith may follow. (2) In making choice. The pursuit of knowledge is based on the inborn love of truth 5 it is an intense enjoyment and carries in it its own exceeding great reward. The possession of knowledge is still better; else God omniscient could not be perfect in bliss, and man's future state would not be an advance upon the present. Encyclopedia Of Sacred Theology written by Abraham Kuyper and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-24 with Philosophy categories.

Encyclopedia of Sacred Theology: Its Principles is the second in a three-volume series. Written by Abraham Kuyper and translated into English by Reverend J. Hendrick Devries, it is a massive book about the history of theology and its place amongst the sciences. This volume does not contain the typical contents of an encyclopedia. Instead of a series of short entries on a variety of topics, Kuyper's book reads much more like a history text. The book is divided into three parts, each of which consists of multiple chapters. The first part is a discussion of the very name of the Theological Encyclopedia, and whether this is an appropriate naming convention to follow. The second part examines the organism of science, and theology's place within the accepted scientific disciplines. The third and final part is a detailed discussion of theology itself, with chapters on the conception, methods and history of the discipline, and more. The book concludes with a brief index of the topics discussed and the proper names referred to. Kuyper's work is extensive and challenging. The book presents an extremely detailed and nuanced discussion of the nature of theology. At more than 700 pages, it is no short work, particularly when one considers that it is only one volume in a three-volume set. Kuyper's Encyclopedia of Sacred Theology: Its Principles is an advanced work about the study of theology. It is not a 'light' read, but one that contains an enormous amount of information. For those serious about the study of theology, Kuyper's work cannot be missed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
