Excerpt from History of the Study of Theology, Vol. 1 The history of the study of Theology is Theological Encyclopaedia placed in its historical frame and order. It traces the study of Theology from the beginning until the present time. There is a study of Theology in all the higher religions. This book does not propose to go beyond the Christian religion. It is the history of the study of Christian Theology. It begins, therefore, with the study of Theology by Jesus Christ and His apostles. Christian Theology may be studied with regard either to its contents or to its forms. The study of the contents of Christian Theology in their historic mould belongs to the department of Church History, as the history of the Christian Religion, of Christian Doctrine, of Christian Institutions, and so on. Theological Encyclopaedia has to do only with the forms of Christian Theology, its methods, the organisation of the various departments of which it is composed, and its literature. The history of the study of Christian Theology is a history of its methods, its disciplines, and its literature. Excerpt from A Brief Introduction to the Study of Theology This little book contains the substance of lectures which for some time I have been in the habit of delivering to the junior students of the Theological Seminary, Cumberland University. It seemed to me that the publication of such an outline treatment of the science of Theo logical Encyclopedia and Methodology would be not only a matter of interest, but also of advantage, to many undergraduate ministerial students. It is certainly desirable that one should have a map, either in his mind or before him, when one studies geography. It is desirable, also, when one travels upon the high seas, even of theological science, that he should be able to knowhis bearings. Perhaps this brief outline of a great subject may serve some such purpose in behalf of that large and less advanced class of theological readers and stu dents for which it is exclusively intended. Per haps, also, it may serve to enliven and intensify the impression on the part of such readers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Theology The Introduction to the Study of Theology, which is here offered to the public, has been delivered, during the last few sessions, in the form of a course of lectures, to Students of Manchester New College. It is hoped that it will be more serviceable to them in its present shape, and that some few beyond the circle for whom it is more immediately intended will find it of use. Its object is to deal, not with the matter but with the scientific form of Theology, and to bring before the student the nature, method, and mutual relations of the various branches of theological study, so that he may see more clearly the bearing of his labours, and view the several departments of his work, not as incoherent fragments, but as constituent mem bers, each with an appropriate place, in a collective organism which embraces them all. Excerpt from Primitive Christianity Its Writings and Teachings in Their Historical Connections, Vol. 1 Ence, the reproach of paganising. That, however, has never made me waver in my conviction, which has remained unshaken ever since I studied under my revered teacher, Ferdinand Christian Baur, that Christianity as a historical phenomenon is to be investigated by the same methods as all other history, and that, in particular, its origin is to be understood by being studied as the normal' outcome Of the manifold factors in the religious and ethical life of the time. Even though the way in which Baur conceived this development was not, as we all know now, quite accurate in detail, yet the principle of development, which he introduced into the his torical study of theology, retains its position by an incontestable right - a position which the temporary reactionary tendency of traditionalism and dogmatic positivism will not ultimately affect in the slightest degree. I believe, moreover, that this tendency is already on the wane, and that the time is not far distant when the application to Biblical Theology of the historical and comparative methods of the Science of Religion will be generally welcomed. When that takes place, people will be able to convince themselves that this scientific investigation of its history in no way endangers the stability of the Christian religion. Quite the contrary. So long as Christianity is conceived of as a miracle, whether unique or repeated, its truth is, for the men of our critical age, always more or less problematical. 'but when it is recognised as the necessary outcome of the development of the religious spirit of our race, towards the production of which the whole history of the ancient world was moving onward, in' the. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II THE STUDY OF THEOLOGY IN THE THIRD AND FOURTH CENTURIES IN THE SCHOOL OF ALEXANDRIA AND ITS DEPENDENTS 1. The school of Alexandria was founded, so far as we are able to determine, by Pantcenus, near the close of the second Christian century. Pantcenus (fc. 200), a Stoic philosopher and a teacher of rhetoric, after his conversion to Christianity organised in Alexandria a Christian school, of which he became the head. It is commonly supposed that this ' school of the faithful' was the ancient catechetical school. If so, it was transformed by Pantaenus. Eusebius1 describes him as 'a man highly distinguished for his learning'; Jerome as of 'great prudence and erudition both in the Scriptures and in secular literature.' 2 They agree in saying that he was sent on a mission to India. According to Eusebius, 'He displayed such zeal for the Divine Word, that he was appointed as a herald of the Gospel of Christ to the nations in the East, and was sent as far as India. For indeed there were still many evangelists of the Word, who sought earnestly to use their inspired zeal, after the examples of the apostles, for the increase and building up of the Divine Word. Pantaenus was one of these.' It is not clear when this mission took place, but it seems most probable that it preceded his activity in the 1 Eusebius, Church History, v. 10. * Jerome, De vir. ill., 86. school. Eusebius tells of it after making his general statement respecting the work of Pantaenus in the school, but he closes his account with the words: 'After many good deeds Pantaenus finally became the head of the school at Alexandria, and expounded the treasures of divine doctrine both orally and in writing.' Jerome ascribes to him 'commentaries on Holy Scripture, ' many of which..

Excerpt from Studies in Theology: Lectures Delivered in Chicago Theological Seminary The lectures which compose this volume were delivered in April 1894 to the Chicago Theological Seminary, and are published at the request of the Faculty of that Institution. They do not amount to a system of theology, but the writer believes they are consistent with each other, and would find their place in a system. They are printed as they were delivered, with one exception. The ninth lecture, which excited considerable discussion in the circles to which it was first addressed, has been re-written not with the view of retracting or qualifying anything, but in order, as far as possible, to obviate misconception, and secure a readier acceptance for what the writer thinks true ideas on the authority of Scripture. The notes have been added, partly to justify the statements made in the lectures as to the Opinions of various theologians and schools, partly to acknowledge the writer's obligations to others. William Placher and Derek Nelson compile significant passages written by the most important Christian thinkers, from the Reformers of the sixteenth century through the major participants in the contemporary theological conversation. Illustrating the major theologians, controversies, and schools of thought, Readings in the History of Christian Theology is an essential companion to the study of church history and historical theology. Excerpts are preceded by the editors' introductions, allowing the book to stand alone as a coherent history. This revised edition expands the work's scope, drawing throughout on more female voices and expanding to include the most important twenty-first-century theological contributions. This valuable resource brings together the writings of major theologians from the church's history for a new generation of students.
