The Buddhist Bible was first published in Vermont in 1932 by DWIGHT GODDARD (1861-1939), a pioneer in the American Zen Buddhist movement. It contains edited versions of foundational Buddhist texts designed to provide spiritual seekers with the heart of the Zen message. Writing at a time when Buddhism was greatly misunderstood in the West, Goddard hoped to bring a new and deep understanding to light. His mission was not only to explain Buddhism to his fellow Americans but to show how the ancient religion could be made relevant to modern problems. The Buddhist Bible made a huge impact when it was published and is known to have influenced the views of iconic Beat author Jack Kerouac.

Indian Types of ethical and philosophical Buddhism did not easily find acceptance in China; it took centuries of contact before a distinctively Chinese adaptation of Buddhism was effected that proved to be congenial to Chinese soil. This Chinese type of Buddhism is called Ch'an in China, and Zen in Japan, and Zen seems to be the more familiar name for it in America and Europe. Other sects have risen and decreased but they proved to be more or less exotic, they never became indigenous as did Zen. An exception may be suspected in the case of the Pure Land Sects, but it should be remembered that the Pure Land Sects developed from Zen and not independently. To tell the story of this adaptation of the Indian type of Buddhism until it became fixed in the teachings of the Sixth Patriarch, is the purpose of this book. The main part of the book is given over to English Versions of the favorite scriptures of the Zen Sect. To this is added Historical and Literary Introductions and a few notes that seem to be called for to make certain phases of the Sutras more easily intelligible.

A Buddhist Bible has inspired and delighted readers since its publication in 1934. It contains key texts from the Zen (or Chan) Buddhist tradition. The Lankavatara Sutra shaped the teachings of the Zen (originally Lanka) school; a copy of the Sutra was passed from the patriarch of this school to his successor. The Diamond Sutra and the Sutra of Transcendental Wisdom are key texts from the canon of Mahayana Buddhism. The Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch tells the remarkable story of Huineng, the sixth Chan patriarch, and is the basis for all later schools of Chan and Zen Buddhism. Details of the life of the Buddha are well documented in the literature of early Buddhism, but the first inspirational account of his life was not written until five hundred years after his death. The Light of Asia is in that inspirational tradition, a charming poetic retelling of the Buddha's life by the Victorian poet Sir Edwin Arnold. These two texts, never previously available in one volume, offer an inspiring introduction to anyone interested in the more mystical side of Buddhist thinking.

The book that launched American "Beat Zen!" In a 1954 letter to poet Allen Ginsberg (Howl, Kaddish), emerging literary giant Jack Kerouac (On The Road, The Dharma Bums)wrote that Dwight Goddard's A BUDDHIST BIBLE was "by far the best book" available on the subject of Buddhism. Its clear, reader-friendly elucidation of such important Zen Scriptures as The Diamond Sutra, The Prajna Paramita Sutra and The Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch opened the door for Kerouac's personal immersion into daily Zen practice, and through his many Buddhist-influenced novels and other writings, for the enlightenment of generations of "Beatnik's," Hippies and serious students of the Dharma to come. This New Paradigm Press edition has been carefully edited by author and thirty year Zen practitioner Lawrence W. Dolnick to update spelling and grammatical peculiarities to meet the needs of modern readers without sacrificing the informative richness and inspiring charm of the original.
