Segundo romance de Mario Vargas Llosa, publicado em 1966, "A Casa Verde" é também um de seus livros mais ambiciosos. Nele, o autor de Travessuras da menina má entrelaça a voz de diferentes personagens para narrar a história de um prostíbulo montado perto de uma das cidades mais isoladas do Peru, mudando a rotina de seus habitantes. O autor tinha apenas 29 anos quando terminou o livro. Antes, já havia tido grande sucesso com a publicação dos contos reunidos em Os chefes (1959) e com o seu primeiro romance, A cidade e os cachorros (1963). Com "A Casa Verde", ele se firmou como um dos principais autores latino-americanos dos anos 1960. No livro, Dom Anselmo é um forasteiro misterioso que constrói, às margens da pequena cidade de Piúra, no Peru, uma casa toda pintada de verde. Em pouco tempo, os habitantes desse pacato vilarejo descobrem que a construção nada mais é que um prostíbulo instalado em um dos locais mais ermos do país. Com influências de William Faulkner e Gustave Flaubert, Vargas Llosa cria um texto vibrante, em que a voz do narrador se mescla à fala dos personagens, e ações do passado e do presente se intercalam num fluxo inovador.Publicado originalmente em 1966, o romance recebeu no mesmo ano o Prêmio da Crítica, na Espanha, e, em 1967, o Prêmio Internacional de Literatura Rómulo Gallegos, na Venezuela, como melhor romance em língua espanhola.
