The message of these essays is that the Enlightenment should not be regarded as a revolutionary programme for the future. The philosophers of the Enlightenment hoped to educate individuals in the light of modern science according to Kant's adage: Aude sapere and did not want to change the structure of society. F.L.van Holthoon is emeritus professor of social history in the University of Groningen.

300 Years Of Adam Smith written by Jürgen G. Backhaus and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-11 with Business & Economics categories.
To mark the 300th anniversary of Adam Smith’s birth, the 37th Heilbronn Symposium on Economics and the Social Sciences was dedicated to his outstanding oeuvre, but above all to his most famous work, “An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations” (1776), which is regarded as a keystone of modern economics. The influence of Smith’s doctrine has made a lasting contribution to the development of a modern understanding of society and the economy and, in particular, the functioning of markets. This is not least because of the breadth of his approach, with overlaps between political economy, social philosophy and ethics. The planned volume builds on the current state of Smith research and also provides new insights into the dissemination of Smith’s ideas in German-speaking countries, but also in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

This book discusses Samuel Pufendorf and his contributions to the development of the European Enlightenment and the emergence of economics as a social science. Born in 1632 in Saxony, Pufendorf wrote widely on natural law, ethics, jurisprudence, and political economy and was one of the most important figures in early-modern political thought. Although his work fits within the intellectual framework of natural jurisprudence, there is an argument to be made that his ideas promoted the development of economics as a distinct discipline within the social sciences. Written by participants in the 34th Heilbronn Symposion in Economics and the Social Sciences, the contributions to this volume give an overview of Pufendorf’s influence on other authors of the Enlightenment, such as Locke, Montesquieu, and Rousseau, as well as addressing the theoretical implications of his extensive writings. Further chapters place a special focus on Pufendorf’s discussion of economic matters, such as property rights theory, price theory, taxation, and preferences and decision-making. The book concludes with analyzing Pufendorf’s influence on Adam Smith, his anticipations of elements of modern economic theory, and his impact on the history of economic thought. Providing a fresh look at one of the foundational scholars of social science, this volume will be of interest to researchers and students of the history of economic thought, political economy, economic history, and political philosophy.

French Historians In The Nineteenth Century written by F.L. van Holthoon and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-22 with History categories.
This study is a reflection on the major historians of nineteenth-century France, and shows that, near the end of the century, a major change of perspective occurred. The historians discussed in the opening sections of the book looked to the past for guidance, while modern historians from the twentieth-century onwards regard the past as a closed book which the historian has to open. Guizot is the hero of the first section of the book; in part two, Comtesse d’Agoult (Daniel Stern) is specifically mentioned, partly because she, who wrote a splendid history of the revolution of 1848, tends to be ignored as a historian while Michelet and Tocqueville are still discussed. The historians in part three are transitional figures who politically and morally still belong to the nineteenth-century, but whose histories show the new approach to the past.

This unique collection of essays, published together for the first time, not only elucidates the complexity of ancient Greek thought, but also reveals Karl Popper's engagement with Presocratic philosophy and the enlightenment he experienced in his reading of Parmenides. As Karl Popper himself states himself in his introduction, he was inspired to write about Presocratic philosophy for two reasons - firstly to illustrate the thesis that all history is the history of problem situations and secondly, to show the greatness of the early Greek philosophers, who gave Europe its philosophy, its science and its humanism.

Adam Smith’s contribution to economics is well recognised, but scholars have recently been exploring anew the multidisciplinary nature of his works. The Adam Smith Review is a rigorously refereed annual review that provides a unique forum for interdisciplinary debate on all aspects of Adam Smith’s works, his place in history, and the significance of his writings to the modern world. It is aimed at facilitating debate between scholars working across the humanities and social sciences, thus emulating the reach of the Enlightenment world which Smith helped to shape. This tenth volume brings together leading scholars from across several disciplines, and offers a particular focus on Smith's continuing impact on the history of economics. There is also an emphasis throughout the volume on the relationship between Smith’s work and that of other key thinkers.
