This study examined the nature and processes of the environmental education included in a year 8 outdoor education program run by an independent Melbourne school. Using the methods and approaches of naturalistic inquiry, observations of three week-long camps were made, 24 staff and students were interviewed, and documents related to the camps were examined. It was found that the camp taught values and behaviour related to the environment, developed awareness of the environment, and taught students information about the specific environment in which the camp took place.

This Open Access book examines children’s participation in dialectical reciprocity with place-based institutional practices by presenting empirical research from Australia, Brazil, China, Poland, Norway and Wales.
