Not illustrated. 1850 edition. Excerpt: ...relative personally to S. Paul may we glean from this Epistle?--That in addition to his having trials and persecutions, he was of weak appearance, and, like Moses (Exodus iv. 10), .poor in speech, and had, moreover, some unknown bodily infirmity, (x. 10; xi. 23--30; xii. 7.) How does the Apostle conclude his letter?--He affectionately, yet firmly, cautions them against their former faults, and ends with a solemn benediction in the Name of the Holy Trinity, (xii. 15, 20; xiii. 2, 10, 14.) S. PAUL'S EPISTLE TO THE GALATIANS. Who were the Galatians?--A people of Asia, some of whom afterwards settled in France, and were called Gauls. (Acts xvi. 6.) What seems one object of this Epistle?--To reprove them for certain errors of doctrine and practice into which they had been seduced. (i. 6; iii. 1: v. 7--12.) To what does the Apostle direct their attention as the peculiar privilege and object of their conversion to the Gospel?--To their adoption as sons of God (iv. 5, 6), the destruction of the works of the flesh (v. 16--21), and the bringing forth the fruits of the Spirit, (v. 22, 25.) THE EPISTLE TO THE EPHESIANS. Who were the Ephesians?--The inhabitants of the great and wealthy city of Ephesus. (Acts xix.) What is the object of this Epistle?--It does not appear to have any special object, but contains the most edifying instruction upon various points of Christian doctrine and practice. How does the Apostle impress upon the Ephesians the duty of endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace?--By reminding them that there is one Loud, one Faith, one Baptism, and that our Loud is Head of the Church which is His body, and we members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones, (iv. 5; i. 22, 23; v. 30.) What is contained towards...

Fulfilled In Christ The Sacraments A Guide To Symbols And Types In The Bible And Tradition written by Fr. Devin Roza and has been published by Emmaus Road Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-01 with Religion categories.

The Early Church read the Scriptures with the conviction that (in the words of St. Augustine), “The New Testament lies hidden in the Old and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New.” Drawing inspiration from how both the Apostles and Christ himself read the Old Covenant as referring to the New (cf. Luke 24:27, 1 Peter 3:20–21, 1 Corinthians 10:1–5), the Church found the Old Testament to be rich with figures, or “types,” that foreshadowed both the mysteries of the life of Christ and the mysteries, or sacraments, of the New Covenant. And yet, in modern times the study of types (or “typology”) has been largely abandoned by scholars due to the dangers of subjectivity and exaggeration. How can typology be studied in a way that is objective and that avoids the excesses present in the past? Fr. Devin Roza seeks to offer a solution to these difficulties by asking the question, “According to the Scriptures and the living Tradition of the Church, what are the types and symbols of the sacraments and what do they mean?” As authorized representatives of the living Tradition, the Liturgy (including the readings from the Church Fathers) and the Catechism, together with the Scriptures, offer both the scholar and pastor the opportunity to study typology as the Catholic Church herself understands and prays it today, in those texts the Church considers her own. Fulfilled in Christ thus offers a comprehensive and readable summary of references to types and symbols of the sacraments in the Scriptures and the living Tradition of the Church, as represented by the Liturgy and the Catechism. The result is a highly objective, scholarly, and at the same time pastoral study of how the Church understands and lives the types and symbols of the sacraments today.

It touches upon questions about Scripture, tradition, and the teaching authority of the Church. The major concern of the document is to proclaim a Catholic understanding of the Bible as the "word of God." Key elements include: Trinitarian structure, roles of apostles and bishops, and biblical reading in a historical context.

From the bestselling author of The Lamb's Supper and Signs of Life comes an illuminating work that unlocks the many mysteries of the Catholic sacrament of the Eucharist. Long before the New Testament was a document, it was a sacrament. Jesus called the Eucharist by the name Christians subsequently gave to the latter books of the Holy Bible. It was the "New Covenant," the "New Testament," in his blood. Christians later extended the phrase to cover the books produced by the apostles and their companions; but they did so because these were the books that could be read at Mass. This simple and demonstrable historical fact has enormous implications for the way we read the Bible. In Consuming the Word: The New Testament and the Eucharist in the Early Church, Dr. Scott Hahn undertakes an examination of some of Christianity's most basic terms to discover what they meant to the sacred authors, the apostolic preachers, and their first hearers. Moreover, at a time when the Church is embarking on a New Evangelization he draws lessons for Christians today to help solidify their understanding of the why it is Catholics do what Catholics do. Anyone acquainted with the rich body of writing that flows so inspiringly from the hand and heart of Dr. Hahn knows that he brings profound personal insight to his demonstrated theological expertise,” writes Cardinal Donald Wuerl in the foreword to the book. Consuming the Word continues in that illustrious tradition. It brings us a powerful and welcome guide as we take our place in the great and challenging work in sharing the Good News.
