Sisters Bernie and Libby Simmons are reunited with a distant relative who wants them to cater a New Year’s Eve event—and help find a guilty party . . . It’s been years since Bernie and Libby’s parents became estranged from Ada Sinclair’s side of the family—though the reasons for the rift are lost to history. The sisters, however, are intrigued when Ada makes contact and tells them about the long-ago deaths of her father and his business partner—both of which were ruled accidental. Ada thinks otherwise—and has a plan. On New Year’s Eve, she’ll gather a group of guests and read from a diary she’s found in her mother’s attic that she thinks will expose the culprit. The Simmons sisters agree to provide refreshments for the bash, but when the night arrives, a guest drops dead. In the tumult, the diary disappears. When Ada is arrested for murder, she’ll have to hope that Bernie and Libby can provide a resolution before the clock runs out. Includes Original Recipes for You to Try! “Fast paced and lively, this mystery will appeal to fans of Joanne Fluke and Laura Childs.” —Booklist

An “amusing” mystery filled with “lively characters, irresistible food descriptions, and witty dialogue” (Publishers Weekly). Susie Katz is known as the crazy cat lady of Longely, New York, and goes out of her way to earn the title, right down to her cat T-shirts and porcelain Hello Kitties. She’s a fanatic for anything feline. Humans, not so much. So when she decides to put up a tent on her property and hold an extravagant wedding ceremony for her two Russian blues, she makes sure to include a few two-legged guests—primarily to raise some hackles. All her favorite enemies will be there: her bird-loving neighbor, a rival cat breeder, a local animal rights activist, and the niece and nephew who stand to inherit her considerable fortune…if she doesn’t spend it all on cat tchotchkes first. Susie can’t wait for them all to watch as Boris and Natasha slink up the aisle in their very expensive diamond-studded collars, before everyone starts digging in to the poached salmon and caviar provided for the occasion by catering sisters Bernie and Libby. But chaos erupts when a wedding gift is unwrapped and a mischief of mice jump out of the box—followed by the disappearance of all the pampered partygoers. Just a few hours later, Susie is stabbed in the back while searching for her missing kitties near the now-empty tent—and it’s up to the Simmons sisters to sniff out the killer. Includes original recipes for you to try!

THE KNICKERBOCKER HOTEL Built between 1923 and 1925, the famous Hollywood Hotel Knickerbocker was in its early days, a mainstay in the life of Hollywood's most glorious celebrities. But, looking at this aging hotel on Ivar Avenue, you probably wouldn't guess that it had much of a Hollywood history. Similarly, looking at Earl Watson, an unassuming man, residing in Fresno, California, you probably wouldn't guess that he too, was a part of Hollywood's golden history. But, you'd be dead wrong. Hollywood's elite came to the Knickerbocker and was greeted by the ever-smiling Earl Watson. From 1946 to 1962, Watson worked as a doorman at the famed hotel. Where most people only dream of seeing such celebrities as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, Earl Watson rubbed elbows with them. Today, the Hotel Knickerbocker is an apartment house for senior citizens, but back in the 1920s, it was in the heart of Hollywood and played a key role in Tinsel town's history. The Hotel was closed and the rooms converted to apartments in 1971. In 1991, the hotel bar was re-opened as the "All Star Theatre Cafe And Speakeasy," a coffee house nestled in the plush atmosphere of a glamorous past. And although the entrance to the hotel is closed to the public, you can still look through the glassed doors and imagine the splendor and magic that was the Knickerbocker. Just as the All Star Theatre Café and Speakeasy allows the spectator to revisit Hollywood's elegant past, Earl Watson, doorman to the stars, can bring the past to life with his tales of hobnobbing with the Hollywood elite. His home in Fresno California is a museum filled with memorabilia of those days in Hollywood. But there is much more to Earl Watson, the man, who grew up in Chicago's South Side during the depression years. As a young man, he served proudly with the Armed Forces in Europe and fought in the fiercest battles of the war, first at Normandy and then in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of the Rhine River. There is more to this modest gentleman from Chicago than a story about the past vestiges of the Knickerbocker and the famous people who lived there. It is the story of lives interwoven in the tapestry of Hollywood's grandeur as seen and experienced by the always-smiling Earl of the Knickerbocker Hotel. Just ask E Entertainment, the worldwide syndicated television show out of Hollywood. They wanted to do a piece about Hollywood and the old Knickerbocker Hotel. They went to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and were referred to Johnny Grant, who had been the mayor of Hollywood for many years. When they contacted Johnny Grant, he told them that they should call "Earl Watson" because he was there in that era. They contacted Earl and set up an interview in his home in Fresno, California. They spent a couple of hours with Earl and collected 55 years of history. Writers who did not know the hotel or the employees have written many untrue stories about the Hotel over the years . but Earl Watson lived it.

The Widows Web is a story that carries several messages. Love is not diminished by wealth, nor is it protected. The house gift was written to demonstrate parental love that carries no price tag. Doug Harrison's presentation of the gift was written with personal empathy. The story also reminds us that while we may plan our futures, destiny often intervenes and takes us to a new path where the sun has not traveled, but where there can be comfort in the far off sounds of a bird singing to the forest. Andrea's voyage to a far off land was as much of a surprise to her as it is to the reader!
