You are cordially invited to accompany author Kayden Jayne West on her journey through the valley of the shadow of death. You are invited to share her emotions and inner thoughts as she experiences the effects of the death sentence pronounced upon her unborn grandson to the unparalleled exaltation she enjoys today with that 7 year old miracle child. The journey has been long, the road has been rough, but the battle has been won - proving that with God all things are possible. Kayden was living a typically normal life prior to the start of this journey. The journey begins with the doctor's cold, harsh words stating that the baby had a 0% chance of survival; the amniotic fluid was gone; the pregnancy had to be terminated, the baby's lungs could not develop and would not inflate, but would stick together at birth and the infant would not be viable; the skin would be transparent; the fingers and toes would be webbed; and the hospital saves their beds for mothers whose babies can survive. The journey ends with the prolific words of that 19 ounce, 12 inch baby - now a typical 7 year old, speaking about Gods law. Kayden's experience details her life beyond the everyday routines into the realm of faith and miracles. It allows you to walk with her through the dark times when the doctors said her grandson would not survive and through the triumphant times when God stepped in and said he would live. Kayden's faith has sustained her and she has been rewarded with God's answers many times. She can convey many personal experiences revealing the result of her faith and prayers, such as the time she stayed all night at the hospital and upon getting into her car realized that she was not physically able to drive an hour home and work the next day. She relates how she simply laid her head on the steering wheel and prayed to God - telling him that she was not able to drive home on her own, and if she got there, she would have to have his help. She doesn't really remember the drive home, but she knows it was not her hands guiding the wheel that took her safety home and through the next day at work; or the night she failed to notice her gas light was on and she was miles from the nearest station. Then, as she drove and prayed, she looked down later and the gas light was off and gas tank registered a quarter tank of gas. She knows the power of prayer and the true meaning of faith in God. Through it all, Kayden was never alone. God was always with her and she gives him all the credit for her ability to withstand the long road of fear and stress and never give up. She knows He spared the life of an unborn child who is now an instrument of God has changed the lives of so many people. Let him change your life too.

We all come to crossroads in our lives where a step in one direction or another can dictate the rest of our time on the planet. It can happen just once for some, or like Stephen and his son Terry, it can happen often and each time they make a choice they are half a chance to make the right one. If it is wrong then the next choice even though it may be fuelled by alcohol or drugs may be a little more complex, and so it goes, life unfolds and we take what we get. Half a Chance is just one such story of a family influenced by everything that was Australia from the 1950's through to the 1970's. The good and the bad, the ecstatic highs and the dreadful lows, to survive all this is their challenge as life goes on.

WINNER of CBC Canada Reads In the tradition of Elie Wiesel’s Night and Primo Levi’s Survival in Auschwitz comes a bestselling new memoir by Canadian survivor Finalist for the 2017 RBC Taylor Prize More than 70 years after the Nazi camps were liberated by the Allies, a new Canadian Holocaust memoir details the rural Hungarian deportations to Auschwitz-Birkenau, back-breaking slave labour in Auschwitz I, the infamous “death march” in January 1945, the painful aftermath of liberation, a journey of physical and psychological healing. Tibor “Max” Eisen was born in Moldava, Czechoslovakia into an Orthodox Jewish family. He had an extended family of sixty members, and he lived in a family compound with his parents, his two younger brothers, his baby sister, his paternal grandparents and his uncle and aunt. In the spring of1944--five and a half years after his region had been annexed to Hungary and the morning after the family’s yearly Passover Seder--gendarmes forcibly removed Eisen and his family from their home. They were brought to a brickyard and eventually loaded onto crowded cattle cars bound for Auschwitz-Birkenau. At fifteen years of age, Eisen survived the selection process and he was inducted into the camp as a slave labourer. One day, Eisen received a terrible blow from an SS guard. Severely injured, he was dumped at the hospital where a Polish political prisoner and physician, Tadeusz Orzeszko, operated on him. Despite his significant injury, Orzeszko saved Eisen from certain death in the gas chambers by giving him a job as a cleaner in the operating room. After his liberation and new trials in Communist Czechoslovakia, Eisen immigrated to Canada in 1949, where he has dedicated the last twenty-two years of his life to educating others about the Holocaust across Canada and around the world. The author will be donating a portion of his royalties from this book to institutions promoting tolerance and understanding.

Causal uncertainty is a wide-spread phenomenon. Courts are often unable to determine whether a defendant’s tortious conduct was a factual cause of a plaintiff’s harm. Yet, sometimes courts can determine the probability that the defendant caused the plaintiff’s harm, although often there is considerable variance in the probability estimate based on the available evidence. The conventional way to cope with this uncertainty has been to apply the evidentiary rule of ‘standard of proof’. The application of this ‘all or nothing’ rule can lead to unfairness by absolving defendants who acted tortiously and may also create undesirable incentives that result in greater wrongful conduct and injustice to victims. Some courts have decided that this ‘no-liability’ outcome is undesirable. They have adopted rules of proportional liability that compensate plaintiffs according to the probability that their harm was caused by the defendant’s tortious conduct. In 2005 the Principles of European Tort Law (PETL) made a breakthrough in this regard by embracing rules of proportional liability. This project, building on PETL, endeavours to make further inquiries into the desirable scope of proportional liability and to offer a more detailed view of its meaning, implications, and ramifications.
