Em Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, o filósofo austríaco Ludwig Wittgenstein deixa claro que a vida apenas se mostra nos fatos, os quais conferem sentido, valor e forma moral aos acontecimentos naturais e à vida humana. E para descrever estes fatos, usa-se a linguagem, as proposições, o objeto de estudo deste Tractatus. Há uma fórmula para Wittgenstein e ele a destrincha neste livro — matematicamente. Ele trata da relação entre linguagem e realidade e visa definir os limites da ciência. Este livro é escrito em um estilo sucinto, contendo quase nenhum argumento, mas proposições, num total de 525 tópicos declarativos, que são numerados. O Tractatus é reconhecido pelos filósofos como uma obra filosófica significativa do século XX e foi influente principalmente entre os filósofos positivistas lógicos do Círculo de Viena, como Rudolf Carnap e Friedrich Waismann. A leitura de "Principia Mathematica", de Bertrand Russell, influenciou Wittgenstein no caminho filosófico e a partir das reflexões deste livro, ele construiu seu Tractatus. Aliás, nesta edição, baseada da edição inglesa, a introdução é de Bertrand Russell, que faz análises sobre o trabalho de Wittgenstein. Russell tinha o austríaco como seu pupilo dileto, apesar das rusgas. Eles se encontraram em 1911, quando o autríaco se mudou para Cambridge. Com a Primeira Guerra Mundial, Wittgenstein vai para o front como soldado e lá escreveu as notas para o seu Tractatus. Completou o livro durante uma licença militar no verão de 1918, que foi originalmente publicado em alemão em 1921 como Logisch-Philosophische Abhandlung (Tratado Lógico-Filosófico). Em 1922 foi publicado juntamente com uma tradução inglesa e um título latino, que foi sugerido para lembrar o Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, de Baruch Spinoza (1670). É desta edição inglesa que a Convivivm Editorial fez a tradução para o português. Mas os vínculos vão se acabando e Wittgenstein tornou-se um pensador solitário. "Meus escritos são todos conversas comigo mesmo", disse em outro escrito. Tractatus inicialmente foi planejado como um livro sobre os fundamentos da lógica, mas Wittgenstein o conclui convencido de que o livro continha a chave para a solução de todos os problemas filosóficos importantes, e isto o faz se desinteressar da filosofia. É seu único texto publicado em vida.

This book attempts to establish a paradigm for the way language works - that is, means and creates meaning - in contemporary Western poetry. The «model» is developed from a rereading of Ludwig Wittgenstein's theory of language; a rereading that is complemented with Karl Kraus's conception of language creation and Paul Valéry's theories of poetry and language. The implications of the paradigm are then explored from several perspectives: the process of writing and reading; the mechanisms of language combination; the «ideational» content of its «crystallizations» (meanings); and their materiality as linguistic objects. As a result, the paradigm allows us to understand the philosophical import of poetry as a form-of-life inextricably attached to the signifying mechanisms of language.
