Told with the intensity of a medical thriller, the extraordinary story of how Clay Whiffen and his family conquered autism. "Leeann Whiffen's fight for her son is a poignant, intimate story of perseverance and love - a reminder to all of us that a mother is the greatest ally a child with autism will ever have. A Child's Journey out of Autism shines a heartfelt light on a future of healing and hope." Jenny McCarthy, author of Mother Warriors and Louder than Words The therapy costs $30,000. We'd be mortgaging our lives and our savings on something we're not even sure could help our son. But the clock is ticking: the longer we wait, the harder it will be to pull him out of this shell. How are we going to afford it? How can we not afford it? When Clay Whiffen was diagnosed on the autism spectrum, his parents didn't know where to turn. They refused to believe that he could not be cured, and began to try every therapy they could afford - and many they couldn't. In this extraordinary story of one family's struggle with autism, Leeann Whiffen gives voice to the fear of losing a child and the fight to reclaim him, exploring what treatments eased her son Clay's symptoms, where the Whiffens found support, and how the family conquered one of the toughest challenges a child can face. With a foreword by autism specialist Dr. Bryan Jepson, A Child's Journey out of Autism spells out what treatments worked, where the family found help, and how they made it through this crushing crisis. In a time of despair and confusion - when another child is diagnosed with autism every 20 minutes - this is a profound, proven message of hope for anyone whose life is touched by the disorder.

Smiling at Shadows is an insightful and honest account of the often difficult path to adulthood that a child living with autism must face. It is also the story of two parents who learned how to step into their child s world and draw him out into their own. An engaging story, this book is also a valuable resource for therapists, educators, and medical practitioners. More importantly, for parents and family members, it portrays the heartache and joy that families living with autism experience. The book shows families how to maintain hope and how to share in their child s life and happiness."

She looked into my eyes and blinked hers slowly and deliberately, like a stroke victim, to show me that although she couldn't speak, she understood what I was saying to her. I stroked her hair softly. 'I know you're in there, honey,' I told her. 'We'll get you out.'" Despite the horror of seeing fifteen-month-old Elizabeth slip away into autism, her mother knew that her bright little girl was still in there. When Elizabeth eventually learned to communicate, first by using a letterboard and later by typing, the poetry she wrote became proof of a glorious, life-affirming victory for this young girl and her family. I Am in Here is the spiritual journey of a mother and daughter who refuse to give up hope, who celebrate their victories, and who keep trying to move forward despite the obstacles. Although she cannot speak, Elizabeth writes poetry that shines a light on the inner world of autism and the world around us. That poetry and her mother's stirring storytelling combine in this inspirational book to proclaim that there is always a reason to take the next step forward--with hope.

"This is not the story of a miracle - it is much truer than that. It is a fine-grained tale of the realities of life with a child who has autism, a challenging and puzzling disorder, but who is still his unique, loveable self." - Dr. Elizabeth Seagull, Pediatric Psychologist, Professor Emeritus Michigan State University.

Cindy Rasmussen wrote this story for her children to help them understand what happened in their family when they were growing up, from the perspective of a Mom. Her eldest son, Mark, was only 19 months old when her autistic son, Steven, was born and only 2 1/2 when the first serious problems began. Steven was 6 years old when Geoffrey was born. So although they were there for most of the journey, they have little memory or understanding of the most difficult years for our family. It is her hope that as adults they can read her account and gain a deeper insight and understanding into things that took place in their childhoods and that this knowledge might help them as they go forward in their own lives.

This is an excellent travelers' guide because it is written by people who have been there. The stories are enthralling and the authors' experiences enable us to understand the culture and perspective of people with autistic spectrum disorder. This book is recommended for anyone who has embarked on a journey to explore a part of our world that we have only recently discovered.' - from the foreword by Tony Attwood 'I had a great many of my hunches and hopes confirmed when I read the words of the generous parents, and their even more generous children, who contributed to this book ... Most important, I learned it is possible to be inspired to see the glass as half full, no matter how many leaks there seem to be in the cup ... I believe the community who reads this book will join me in thanking those who wrote it, for their courage, their wit and their plethora of ideas.' - from the foreword by Liane Holliday Willey For the families who have contributed to this book, living with autism spectrum disorders has been a journey of self-discovery. With honesty and humor, they describe the ways autism has affected their daily lives, the challenges they have faced and the approaches they have found beneficial. They share their practical and original strategies for dealing with issues such as helping children to develop empathy and humor, developing and maintaining friendships and explaining their autism spectrum disorders to other people. This book will be a source of advice and inspiration for families of children with autism and the professionals who work with them. It is practical, realistic and positive - autism is seen as something to be understood and celebrated. As 11-year-old Glen states in the Appendix, written by some of the children with autism featured in the book: 'I like myself and consider my difference something positive.' Linda Andron is a licensed clinical social worker, Adjunct Lecturer in Psychiatry and Bio-Behavioural Sciences and Clinical Instructor at the University of California at Los Angeles. A mother of an adult child with autism ponders what happens to children like hers when their parents and families are no longer around to care for them. I Am Me challenges the values and priorities of institutions, communities, and systems to grapple with what is today referred to as a “tsunami”—the nearly 50,000 children who each year face an adult world so sadly unprepared to deal with their ever-growing needs. Like snowflakes, each autistic is different, no less, and deserves respect. It is a journey told through the prism of a mother who offers, hope, belief, and conviction that the life of a child with autism can and should be fulfilling and rewarding, and who compels readers to engage in helping to make the world a safer and better place for those affected by this mysterious condition. In her personal story, Dr. Marlene Ringler takes us into the world of the autistic and helps us to appreciate the complexities of living in a world where being different is a lifelong struggle. She shares her own investigation of this complex neurological disorder, looking for answers where few, if any, exist. Her fascinating journey directly addresses those very human questions as she presents her research findings and current investigations into the spectrum disorder in everyday language. “Marlene has gifted the autism community with a guide that will be useful to parents and others wishing to understand autism from the autism community at large.” —Stephen Mark Shore, EdD, author of Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome

This book is for anyone starting on the journey of being a parent to an autistic child.A few years back, I learnt my son was autistic, however I didn't know what that meant. It was just a word. Was it a condition, or a disability or just a different personality type and what impact would it have?Back then I went hunting for information, much of it contradictory, much of it worrying, much of it written with a certainty that wasn't justified. What I needed were examples of the types of situations I would face and concerns I would have as a parent trying to do their best for a child I didn't fully understand.Key to that, I really could have done with someone simply saying that giving time is the main thing. Play with your child, get to know them, engage in their interests and the rest will follow.Yes, do reading, worry about schools and jobs and other stuff off in the future but right now all that can wait. Just engage with a child to whom you are everything.Writing the book has been cathartic and yet it is a book that both is and isn't personal. It is personal in that it is written from experience rather than by an expert on all things autism, it is also personal in that it is written as a reminder to myself to follow the principles contained within. At the same time, while it is shaped by my son, it is not a book about him and nor is it a book for me.It is a book for you, right now.Your child is autistic, you will have a sense that makes things different. In this book I'll talk through examples, whether it is small allowances like engaging in niche interests or ruling out certain venues, or bigger concerns such as battling for suitable educational provision. What binds the topics together is an urge to do what's best for your child, only without certainty as to what best actually looks like. There are 10 key messages.1) Most parents to autistic children will have similar concerns, it is worth remembering that you are not alone2) There is no destination, only progress3) You will become the world's leading expert on your child. Carry this confidence around with you - listen to others but don't downplay your own experience and knowledge.4) Spend time with your child, if they have an interest embrace it as if it's your own. An autistic child may not grow up to have a large social group, arguably this makes their relationship with those closest to them all the more important5) Don't be too hard on yourself. Things go wrong even when perfectly planned. Everyone gets frustrated. If you have a bad five minutes, don't let it become a bad hour. If you have a bad day, don't let it become a bad week.6) Develop a thick skin. Your child will have meltdowns, they might, if they're anything like mine, say the odd random thing that you might feel the need to apologise for. Deal with it, move on and forget about it. Do not allow the past to limit the present7) Don't overstate the impact of autism - every family has struggles, every child is challenging. Do not frame each challenge as if it is caused by autism.8) It's the environment and society that needs to change, not your child. The world is not set up with autistic children in mind, that's not their fault. They need to learn to cope, but not to be someone they are not.9) Remember that although your autistic child has needs so too does everyone in the family unit. This especially applies to any siblings, their needs cannot be compromised.10) Right now matters more than the future. In this book, every chapter starts You Will, yet that suggests a certainty that I cannot deliver. I cannot say definitely what you will do, all I know is that there are certain topics and questions that are likely to occupy your thoughts. There is one exception. There is a You Will chapter of which I'm certain. It's the final chapter. You Will Make Things Better. You will do that.Yours from a few years down the line.Jon
