Excerpt from A Chronology and Practical Bibliography of Modern German Literature The Chronology and Bibliography here given were originally intended to supplement a brief outline of the history of German literature written for the texts of the Lake German Series; but as the material grew far beyond the limits of an appendix, it was thought best to rearrange and round out this material so as to form an independent work of more general value. Since the attempt was made to cover, in a small volume, the whole field of modern German literature, from Luther to the present day, anything like an exhaustive treatment was of course out of the question. In general, only such authors are included in the Bibliography as appear in the outline, such as must inevitably be mentioned in any rapid survey of modern German literature. The compiler is well aware that the selection here made is open to criticism at a great many points; but in the difficult task of choosing some two hundred names from the great roll of modern German authors, he has at least done his best to avoid caprice and to weigh absolute and historical values impartially. The bibliographical and critical references are intend ed to include only what is best, or at least what is good; to save space, full titles are given only where they are necessary to indicate the character of the work in question. As the Bibliography is designed, in part, to serve as a guide in the purchase of books, prices are generally quoted, and the latest editions noted. Excerpt from A History of German Literature IN writing this volume, it was my task to compress more than a thousand years of literary history into a volume of about four hundred pages. The book was not to be a collection of sheaths garnered here and there in favourite fields, but a real history, dealing with the whole subject coherently and with due regard to the relative importance of periods, writers, and writings. As it was evident that I should be obliged to omit freely and boldly, I decided, first of all, to omit the scholars, philosophers, and men of science, that is, to confine myself pretty closely to literature in the restricted English sense of the word. The broader conception of literature is no doubt the more philosophic, but it is less convenient for a writer who must economise space at every step. The German genius has done much of its best work in scholarship, philosophy, and science, but I was not writing a history of the German genius. Excerpt from Modern German Literature The six years that have elapsed since the first publication of this book have been of more than usual significance in the evolution of German literature. It is no longer practicable to treat the period since 1850 in a single chapter. The imperial literature grows out of the literature of the preparation for empire, but it differs from it increasingly in the mode and spirit of its manifestation. The last chapter of the former edition has been discarded altogether. Two chapters are substituted for it, - one dealing with the literature from the rise of the Young German School to the French War, another with the first generation of Imperial Germany. This has enabled me to show more clearly the currents of literary development, to gain scope for a full treatment of what was before sketched, and to bring the story of German literary development down to the closing months of the century.
