Arnold Thomas, of Bristol, and many other ministers and Christian workers, told me they thought the heroic deaths and sufferings, for Jesus' sake, of so many Chinese converts ought to be put on record. The story, they said, was a legacy to the church universal, which should not be lost, but should be treasured right down the ages, like the record of the persecutions of pagan Rome. No costly memorials have been erected above their graves many of the martyrs never even received burial, their ashes being thrown upon the winds but their memory will never die in the land of their birth so long as the Christian Church grows and thrives in Chinese soil. I have only had space for a very few stories, though they could be multiplied more than ten times over. And I have written only of our London Mission Christians (with the exception of one or two cases which are Specially mentioned in the chapter How the Youth of China Died for as I thought these would be specially interesting to the young people for whom this book is prepared. It is my firm Opinion that it is impossible for any one to feel the full force of this impression, unless he has witnessed and studied it himself. The effect of Christian teaching in Madagascar struck me as possessing a most remarkable character. Of this work the present volume contains an outline, with numerous incidents which strikingly indicate its Divine origin. More than this it would have been unwise to attempt, within limits so restricted. The documents and details which belong to the history of the first twenty years of the Mission, must therefore be sought in the admirable works of the Rev. W. Ellis, and Messrs. Freeman and Johns. But although the following pages contain merely a concise sketch of the progress and effects of Christianity in Madagascar during the protracted period of persecution now so happily terminated, it is believed that such a narrative is urgently required; that, considering the previous condition of those whose faith and patience it describes, more mar vellons illustrations of the Operation of the word of truth and the power of God are not to be found in the history of the Church; and that no Christians present a stronger claim to confidence and love, and no Mission more deserves generous support. Excerpt from The Historic Martyrs of the Primitive Church Tats book is not written for the learned world, but to introduce to the ordinary reader some of the most trustworthy of the records of the primitive martyrs and confessors. In accordance with this object, I have not judged it necessary or expedient to discuss questions which are of much interest to the historian, but which might be repellent to others, concerning the age and authenticity of some of the documents used, or with regard to the trustworthiness of the several narratives. It will, I hope, be enough to say, that no narrative has been inserted in this book which may not be considered historically true, though in some cases the portions here given have been disentangled from a good deal which is fictitious. This is particularly the case with the Roman martyrdoms, such as those of Caecilia and Sebastian; but it holds good also with regard to some of the Eastern martyrdoms, like that of Theodore the Tiro. It would probably be possible, by a similar process of sorting and sifting, to extract something like history out of a good many other Acts and Passions. Le Blant, amongst others, has shown how often material of real value is embedded in the midst of worthless and tire some legend. But I do not think that the book as a whole would gain by the insertion of a large number of doubtful reconstructions. Such narratives as those of Polycarp and the martyrs of Lyons, of Perpetua.
