In Urban Warfare, Rolnik charts how the financialisation of housing has become a global crisis, as models of home ownership, originating in the US and UK, are being exported around the world. These developments were largely organised by htosw who benefit the most: construction companies and banks, supported by government-facilitated schemes, such as 'the right to buy', subsidies, and micro-financing. Using examples ranging from Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Chile, Israel, Haiti, the UK and especially Brazil, Rolnik shows how our homes and neighbourhoods have effectively become the "last subprime frontiers of capitalism". This neoliberal colonialism is experienced on the scale of the city but also within our everyday lives. Yet since the financial crisis and wider urban politics that have left millions homeless, forced from their homes because of urban development politics, and mega-events such as the Rio World Cup in 2013. These narratives are weaved together with theoretical reflections and empirical evidence to explain the crisis in depth. In response, Rolnik restates the political need for activism and resistance. Examining in detail the June Days protests in Rio, 2013-14, she shows that housing remains an essential, and global, struggle.

A sociedade contemporânea é caracterizada pela dinâmica e rapidez de mudança. Essa velocidade de mutação reflete-se no espaço urbano. Outra consequência dessa rapidez é o fato de que nem o planejamento, a gestão urbana e tampouco a legislação conseguem acompanhar o ritmo das transformações territoriais. Portanto, pergunta-se: como materializar as regras urbanísticas e jurídicas no tempo e no espaço das cidades? Não por outro motivo, a Lei Federal n. 10257/01- Estatuto da Cidade foi estruturada por meio de diretrizes de política urbana. Com isso, permite-se o ajuste dessas orientações vinculativas à organização do espaço urbano. Uma dessas diretrizes é a que estabelece a justa distribuição dos ônus e benefícios decorrentes do processo de urbanização. Essa diretriz encontra-se "escondida" no texto legal desde o ano da edição da lei, havendo poucos trabalhos técnicos, acadêmicos ou práticos que concretizem essa diretriz. Adstrito apenas à justa distribuição dos ônus decorrentes do processo de urbanização, o texto busca analisar os conceitos essenciais de captura de mais-valias urbanas, de justiça social urbana e de solidariedade social como mecanismos de materialização da cidade justa. Essa se traduz pelo equilíbrio entre as regiões do espaço urbano, com a oferta isonômica de oportunidades e serviços públicos e comunitários para todos. Ilusão? Utopia? Possibilidade?

Co-curating the City explores the role of universities in the construction and mobilisation of heritage discourses in urban development and regeneration processes, with a focus on six case study sites: University of Gothenburg (Sweden), UCL East (London), University of Lund (Sweden). Roma Tre university (Rome), American University of Beirut, and Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil. The aim of the book is to expand the field of critical heritage studies in the urban domain, by examining the role of institutional actors both in the construction of urban heritage discourses and in how those discourses influence urban planning decisions or become instrumentalised as mechanisms for urban regeneration. It proposes that universities engage in these processes in a number of ways: as producers of urban knowledge that is mobilised to intervene in planning processes; as producers of heritage practices that are implemented in development contexts in the urban realm; and as developers engaged in campus construction projects that both reference heritage discourses as a mechanism for promoting support and approval by planners and the public, and capitalise on heritage assets as a resource. The book highlights the participatory processes through which universities are positioning themselves as significant institutions in the development of urban heritage narratives. The case studies investigate how universities, as mixed communities of interest dispersed across buildings and urban sites, engage in strategies of engagement with local people and neighbourhoods, and ask how this may be contributing to a re-shaping of ideas, narratives, and lived experience of urban heritage in which universities have a distinctive agency. The authors cross disciplinary and cultural boundaries, and bridge academia and practice.
