KWOK KIN POON (潘國鍵, 1949- ) was born in Guangzhou and raised in Hong Kong, and now resides in Toronto. He graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (BA, MPh, DipEd), the University of Hong Kong (MA, PhD), and OISE University of Toronto (MEd). He studied Chinese history under Professor YAN Gengwang (嚴耕望), Chinese calligraphy under his grandfather TSE Hay (謝熙) and Chinese painting under RONG Shushi (容漱石). Dr. Poon is a seasoned teacher, researcher, calligrapher, columnist, and has held exhibitions in Hong Kong and Canada. His publications include 北周疆域考, 北魏與蠕蠕關係研究, 國鍵文集, 潘國鍵書法集, 國鍵畫選, 孫過庭書譜白話對譯, 寫在信仰荊途上, 年在耳順, etc.. He also co-authored with KS Vincent POON A Narrative on Calligraphy by Sun Guoting (英譯書譜) and English Translation of Classical Chinese Calligraphy Masterpieces (英譯法書). 潘國鍵，1949年生於廣州，長於香港，廣東南海人。畢業中文大學新亞書院(榮譽文學士)、研究院(哲學碩士)、教育學院(教育文憑)，香港大學中文系(文學碩士、哲學博士) 及加拿大多倫多大學安省教育學院(教育碩士)。治史師從嚴耕望教授，書法師承外祖父書法家謝熙先生，亦嘗師事名畫家容漱石先生。潘氏長期從事歷史研究、書法創作及文史教學工作， 並為港加兩地報章撰寫專欄。曾於港加舉行書法展覽會。今隱居多倫多市。著有《北周疆域考》、《北魏與蠕蠕關係研究》、《國鍵文集》、《潘國鍵書法集》、《國鍵畫選》、《孫過庭書譜白話對譯》、《寫在信仰荊途上》、《年在耳順》等等; 並與兒子潘君尚合譯 《A Narrative on Calligraphy by Sun Guoting 英譯書譜》及《English Translation of Classical Chinese Calligraphy Masterpieces 英譯法書》。

The Learn Chinese Calligraphy series, divided into three parts, features Dr Kwok Kin Poon’s instructional videos on Chinese calligraphy, voiced over in English by KS Vincent Poon. The entire series, accompanied by worksheets and exercises, focuses on the fundamental techniques in scribing the standard, cursive, semi-cursive, and cursive scripts (楷草篆隸筆法). The three parts are: Instructional Videos on Scribing the Standard Script, Instructional Videos on Scribing the Cursive Script, and Instructional Videos on Scribing the Seal and Clerical Scripts. This ebook is the first of five volumes of Instructional Videos on Scribing the Standard Script, consisting of videos 1 to 5 of the 36 videos on scribing the standard script. The thesis of this volume is on holding the brush, selecting the brush, paper, ink, and inkstone, as well as introducing and demonstrating “The Eight Principles from Scribings Wing (The Eight Principles of Yong, 永字八法)”. Being the top undergraduate in Biochemistry, he is currently a teacher at the Toronto District School Board as well as a calligrapher and a translator. His passion for Chinese culture began at the age of six when he started studying Chinese calligraphy under his father Kwok Kin POON (潘國鍵, PhD). This book reviews the political development of Hong Kong before and after 1997, in particular the evolution of state-society relations in the last two decades, to analyze the slow development of democracy and governance in Hong Kong after 1997. This book is a most comprehensive analysis of the multi-faceted changes in Hong Kong in the last 20 years. The scope of changes analyzed included state functions and institutions, political changes such as party development and development of the Legislative Council, and social changes such as social movements, civil liberties, etc. It helps the reader understand the crisis of governance of Hong Kong after 1997, and the difficulty of democratic development in Hong Kong over the years. The book covers: changing state institutions in Hong Kong in the last few decades; party development in Hong Kong; the changing role and function of the legislature in Hong Kong; the evolution of social movement and movement organizational forms; media freedom, civil liberties, and the role of civil society; and theoretical discussions concerning governance problems and state-society relations in Hong Kong. Special emphasis is placed on how these changes brought about a new state-society relation, which in turn brought governance difficulties after 1997.
