Excerpt from Paintings in Oil and Pastel The present exhibition of paintings by Whistler aims to give a comprehensive idea of the scope and development of his work in color. Only enough pictures have been included to satisfactorily fill the Gallery of Temporary Exhibitions, and in their selection the attempt has been made to exemplify the painter's accomplishment as adequately as possible at the various stages of his career. Owing to the limited space at our disposal for the exhibition, water-colors have not been included, as it was feared that, with their exceedingly delicate and evanescent tone, they could hardly he seen to advantage in the close neighborhood of the more dominant oils and pastels. This is the first considerable exhibition of Whistler's paintings that has been held in New York, although his etchings and lithographs have frequently been seen here. The Museum gratefully acknowledges its obligation to those who, by their generous cooperation, have aided in forming this exhibition. Excerpt from Quincy Adams Shaw Collection: Italian Renaissance Sculpturee Paintings and Pastels Graduating at Harvard College in the Class of 1845, he went to the West the following spring with his friend and relative, the late historian, Francis Parkman. They left St. Louis on the 28th day of April, 1846, on a tour of curiosity and amuse ment to the Rocky Mountains. The story of this journey is told in that fascinating book, The Oregon Trail, dedicated by Mr. Parkman To the Comrade of a Summer and the Friend of a Life Time, Quincy Adams Shaw. The winter Of 1849-1850 he spent in Egypt and in Palestine, with George William Curtis, who afterwards married his niece, Anna Shaw. Returning from the East, Mr. Shaw went to Paris, where his sister, Mrs. William Batchelder Greene (anna Shaw), was living, and remained for seven or eight years. Through the friendship of Mrs. Greene with the famous Madame Julius Mohl Mr. Shaw was thrown in the midst of the literary, scientific and artistic society of the Paris of that day. Madame Mohl was one of the last great ladies to have a salon in the accepted sense of the word. William Morris Hunt, an intimate friend Of Mr. Shaw's, was an art student in Paris, and through him Mr. Shaw was also thrown with the artistic world. Excerpt from Illustrated Catalogue of Paintings, Pastels and Water Colors by the Late Robert C. Minor, N. A IN the early seventies a group of young American art students, pursuing the exacting curriculum of the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts, found themselves persuaded that there was something beyond the horizon which bounded the crypt-like class-rooms of that venerable institution, and began to look outside into the world of art, which they were soon to enter upon with the youthful anticipations of speedy success. The mentor of this little coterie of enthu siastic young man was a newcomer, himself a student, but a student with a more settled purpose and a more reason able and logical ambition than any of us. Compared with his enthusiasm, our emotions seemed tame and cold; we dreamed over processes, he gloried in results. We believed in the school of the Netherlands with a faith that was al most religious; he awakened our interest and developed our belief in the school of France. Our ideas were cramped and narrow because we had been long preoccupied with the absorbing study of the rudiments of the profession; his views on art were broad because, although he could not yet claim a place in the ranks of artists, he had been in close touch with some of the eminent men in the profession and had gained from this intercourse a balance of judgment which no student in the Academy possessed. That new comer was Robert Crannel Minor, and, although he came as a stranger to most of us, his influence made itself felt at once. He had been painting a year or two in America, latterly under the direction of Alfred C. Howland, whose proficiency was a great stimulus to his ambition. While work ing with Howland he began to feel that if he was to make a success as a landscape painter, it was necessary for him to seek his inspiration at the fountain head. This idea grew until he could no longer resist the call, and he left New York and joined the colony of painters in Barbizon at the time when that school was in the apogee of its suc cess. He worked hard for a season there under the per sonal influence and more or less under the direction of Diaz until, probably overpowered by the splendor of the accomplishment of his master and recognizing his own lack of training, he came to Antwerp to study under Van Luppen, a landscape painter of Wide renown and with an admirable technique. From him he learned the deliberate method of the Netherland school, and for a time it seemed as if he would be so influenced by this method that he would be in danger of losing that' point of view in art which distinguished him above his fellow student' Lit he was only acquiring the alphabet, and he had the good judg ment to strike out for himself as soon as he had become familiar with the method which the Flemish master was so well qualified to teach. Excerpt from Catalogue of a Group Exhibition of Water Color Paintings, Pastels, Drawings and Sculpture by American and European Artists: November 19-December 20, Inclusive, 1923 The Brooklyn Museum is especially interested in spreading the taste for water color painting. In the contemplation of the Museum, this is an art, not only replete with charm and with many practical features that should make for popularity, but it is worthy of the most serious study of discriminating art lovers. There is an impression that this branch of painting is without the dignity and importance of oils; that it is suitable only to the amateur with casual training, and that it involves no special difficulties for him. This is far from the truth. An art honored by the life long practice of Winslow Homer, not to cite many other distinguished painters, is not a minor art, nor inferior in its requirements to that of any other department of the fine arts; There are in fact many excellent painters in oil, but to be suc cessful in water color painting in its highest sense takes genius. It must be remembered that water color is a free flowing liquid and every stroke of the brush, accidental or intentional, remains on the drawing paper. The colors cannot be readily expunged or changed without injury to the picture. The artist must from the outset exercise the utmost vigilance. It is essentially the first stroke that counts. For this reason a true transparent watercolor painting is apt to convey in a singularly lucid manner the inspired impulse of the painter, and in consequence one feels closer to his thought than in the often labored and elaborated canvases of the painter m oils. Water color is especially adapted to the American artist. There is something in the joyous freedom of handling and brilliancy of effect possible in this medium that corresponds to the nature conditions by which the artist is typically surrounded, the sparkle of the somewhat thin atmosphere, the preponderance of sunlight, the vivid coloration and high visibility, and perhaps the absence of that vague atmospheric mystery found every. Where also, except in the tropics. The possibilities in the employment of these elements have been shown by what has already been achieved, and great things may be looked forward to in the future. For this reason the Brooklyn Museum has by its exhibitions laid stress on the importance of water color. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
