This commentary shows that the author of the Epistle of James was very much a man of his world, drawing on ideas and idioms that had roots in both Jewish and Greek culture and yet shared some common patterns of Christian teaching. A high degree of critical scholarship and enthusiasm for the text are evinced by the author both in the Introduction and in the Commentary - accompanied by the author's own translation - designed to be of use both to those with and without a knowledge of New Testament Greek.

"This commentary on the epistle of James provides an original translation, meticulous grammatical analysis of the Greek text, and theological exposition addressing perpetual issues in the life of the church and highlighting the enduring relevance of this epistle for Christians amid trials. The author presents careful research into the historical context, purpose, structure, and message of James, which has often been misunderstood, notably in the Lutheran tradition. Dr. Giese offers a positive, corrective interpretation. The overarching theme of James is "the gifts of the giving God and their use." James 1:16-18 stands as the theological center of the book: the eschatological gift of rebirth in Jesus Christ, to be firstfruits of the new creation, establishes the right use of all other divine gifts"--

A Commentary on the Book of James in the New Testament is not just your typical Commentary on the Book of James. Because it gives reader a refreshing scholarly, practical, and in-depth look into having godly behavior and obedience to the Word of God in such times like these, in the twenty-first century. James is writing a letter to the early Christian (Jewish Christian) about putting their faith into action. This commentary lets the reader see a verse-to-verse breakdown of the Word of God from the book of James to let it readers know that blessed is the man or woman who perseveres under trials, for they shall receive the crown of life (James 1:12). To those who persevere under trials, every trial we overcome helps us mature as Christians (James 2). In this Commentary on the Book of James in the New Testament, I tried to give human applications and illustrations to the reader. After each chapter to let the reader of this commentary--whomever is facing heartaches, trials, setbacks, drug abuse, sex abuse, having financial problems, health problems, mental issues, family and even marriage problems--know that God is the only one that can fix their problem or situation. You have to have faith in Almighty God. He is the only one that can get us out of the mess or situation or fix the circumstances that we face as Christians. We know as Christians that the book of James says God is not the author of evil. James says, "Show me Your Faith and I will show you my Faith by my works" (James 2:18). Work goes hand in hand with faith as we do our part on this Christian journey. God is our helper. This Commentary on the Book of James in the New Testament, I hope will inspire you after you have picked it up, read it, and know that you have to do your part, which is to pray and then step out in faith and get off the couch from your comfort zone to do whatever you need to do on your part regarding the circumstance God will help. I'm a witness! We serve a prayer-answering God. James 1:4 says, "But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing." And, reader, if you haven't confessed the Lord Jesus as your Savior, say a prayer of faith today. Say, "Jesus save me. I believe You died for my sins. Come into my heart today. Amen." Romans 10:9 says that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

The Letter of James is perhaps needed more than ever today. In this commentary, Hart argues that the epistle is indeed the work of James of Jerusalem, ""the brother of the Lord,"" that it was an encyclical letter, and that its chief concern was to combat a distorted version of Paul's gospel. It is a work with a singular purpose: to bring the churches back to the most basic teachings of Jesus. In its defense of orthopraxy as the primary Christian standard, its denunciation of those with wealth who exploit or neglect the poor, its hard words for those who have taken on the mantel of ""teacher"" without first learning to restrain their tongues, and above all its exhortation to relearn the truth that ""faith without works [of love] is dead,"" James could be talking to churches in our own time. This commentary presents James afresh, as a living guide with a perennial message for those who seek to follow Jesus. It is pastoral in intent, written for those who teach and preach, those who desire a more authentic discipleship, and those who practice lectio divina--the meditative reading of Scripture. (Includes the entire Greek text and the new English translation of the epistle by David Bentley Hart.) ""Addison Hart's commentary on James accomplishes the difficult task of placing the epistle in its historical and cultural context, including its dialogue with strands of Pauline thought and Jesus's teachings, while at the same time making the epistle come to life for the modern reader. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it."" --Roman A. Montero, Author of All Things in Common: The Economic Practices of the Early Christians ""The apostle James comes alive in Addison Hodges Hart's fascinating commentary on this New Testament epistle . . . In his own way, James was clearly as powerful a figure as Paul in the early church, advocating a subtly different take on Jesus's teaching, and is someone whom Christians still need to hear and understand if they are to know God in their hearts and lives."" --Mark Vernon, Author of The Idler Guide to Ancient Philosophy (2016) ""The greatest surprise of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation was the sheer number of prominent Protestant theologians announcing its end. If the Reformation project of a 'faith vs. works' Paulinism has run out of steam, then the 'What is to be done?' question arises. Addison Hodges Hart's The Letter of James has a plausible answer in precisely a believing-through-doing approach to faith, orthopraxy, based upon James. This return of the repressed Jamesian 'faith through works, ' simultaneously ancient and post-modern, is presented not merely as a rival to early-modern (and ancient) Paulinisms, but also unearths resources for a reading of the Pauline corpus against Paulinism through orthopraxy."" --Artur Rosman, Managing Editor, Church Life Journal Addison Hodges Hart is the author of six previous books on the topics of Scripture, spirituality, interfaith dialogue, and doctrine. His two most recent books are Strangers and Pilgrims Once More: Being Disciples of Jesus in a Post-Christendom World (2014) and The Woman, the Hour, and the Garden: A Study of Imagery in the Gospel of John (2016). He is a former university chaplain and priest, now residing in Norway with his wife.
