In Proclus' penetrating exposition of Euclid's methods and principles, the only one of its kind extant, we are afforded a unique vantage point for understanding the structure and strength of the Euclidean system. A primary source for the history and philosophy of mathematics, Proclus' treatise contains much priceless information about the mathematics and mathematicians of the previous seven or eight centuries that has not been preserved elsewhere. This is virtually the only work surviving from antiquity that deals with what we today would call the philosophy of mathematics.

As part of the Jesuits' programme of introduction to European culture, in 1607 the Elements of Euclid (d.300 B C) were translated for the first time into Chinese. The translation of this epoch-making ancient Greek textbook on deductive geometry meant a confrontation of contemporary Chinese and European cultures. This work explores in depth and at various levels the circumstances and mechanisms that shaped the transmission of a key work of science from one language and cultural context onto another. Consequently it offers often surprising insights into the ways of intercultural exchange and misunderstandings.

This book is for all lovers ofmathematics. It is an attempt to under stand the nature of mathematics from the point of view of its most important early source. Even if the material covered by Euclid may be considered ele mentary for the most part, the way in which he presents it has set the standard for more than two thousand years. Knowing Euclid's Elements may be ofthe same importance for a mathematician today as knowing Greek architecture is for an architect. Clearly, no con temporary architect will construct a Doric temple, let alone organize a construction site in the way the ancients did. But for the training ofan architect's aesthetic judgment, a knowledge ofthe Greek her itage is indispensable. I agree with Peter Hilton when he says that genuine mathematics constitutesone ofthe finest expressions ofthe human spirit, and I may add that here as in so many other instances, we have learned that language ofexpression from the Greeks. While presenting geometry and arithmetic Euclid teaches us es sential features of mathematics in a much more general sense. He displays the axiomatic foundation of a mathematical theory and its conscious development towards the solution of a specific problem. We see how abstraction works and enforces the strictly deductive presentation ofa theory. We learn what creative definitions are and v VI ----=P:. . :re:. ::::fa=ce how a conceptual grasp leads to toe classification ofthe relevant ob jects.

The instructor's edition of Euclid's Elements With Exercises is intended as a guide for anyone teaching Euclid for the first time. Although it could be used by anyone, it was assembled and written with small schools or homeschooling groups in mind. In addition to containing the first six books in exactly the format of the student edition (also available on Amazon), the instructor's edition provides a concise overview of the course, including suggestions for conducting the class, a discussion of the organization of the material, brief comments on supplemental and memory work, and other details about which a new instructor might have questions. It also has notes for the teacher on each of the six books of the Elements, notes on selected exercises, and an appendix explaining the basics of formal reasoning, including an explanation of the converse and contrapositive of a statement and the concept of an indirect proof, which occurs early in Book I. The primary difference between this work and Euclid's Elements as it is usually presented (aside from the fact that there are some exercises), is that, while all of Books I - VI are included in the book, some propositions are omitted in the main body of the text (all omitted propositions are in Appendix A). This was done in order to be able to finish in two semesters all the plane geometry that would normally be covered in a modern geometry class. It should be noted, of course, that the flow of logic of the propositions is never interrupted. This book was not designed for the purist. Although it is pure Euclid and contains all of the first six books, it may offend the sensibilities of some who love Euclid (as the assembler/author does) to fail to place Book II in the expected flow of the main body of the text. For anyone not under a time constraint, or anyone moving quickly through the text, the author strongly recommends the inclusion of Book II in the course flow.

"The ultimate teacher of fact-based, reasoned rhetoric . . . A nice dose of American history makes learning the groundbreaking technique fun." —Nerida F. Ellerton and McKenzie A. Clements, authors on writings of Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln Are you satisfied with the current state of public discourse? The almost unanimous response from people across the nation is a loud and emphatic "No!" The reply is always the same regardless of politics. Today's public discourse typically starts with a "conclusion" and goes downhill from there. If there are talking heads, argument begins instantly and typically runs in circles. This is a dangerous path for a society that depends upon civility and virtue to survive. The Tyranny of Public Discourse addresses what is one of the most important issues of our time. This book can teach anyone how to use logic and reason to create persuasive writing. A byproduct of this is the civility that will ensue with an elevated public discourse. The Tyranny of Public Discourse establishes the six elements of a proposition as a verbal form of the scientific method—something Abraham Lincoln knew and used routinely. His logic and reason are so well known that he is quoted today more than 150 years after his death. Learning the six elements and how to use them to discuss any topic at any time is not only fascinating, but fairly easy to understand and implement. This book sets it all out, step-by-step and color coded, from beginning to end. The Tyranny of Public Discourse, complete with 21 diagrams on how to structure your logic, is the book you have been waiting for. The time is short, and the hour is now.
