Through multiple narratives reflecting the complexity of participatory action research partnerships for social justice, this book sheds light on the dialogic spaces that intentionally support community literacies and rhetorical practices for inquiry and change. Applying literacy as social practice, Larson and Moses tell a story of a unique collaboration between community members and university faculty and students, who together transformed an urban corner store into a cornerstone of the community. Building on the emerging field of community literacies, the book captures the group’s active work on the ground and, on another level, how transformation occurred in the dialogic spaces of the research team as it learned to embrace distributed expertise and multiple identities.

Community Transformation is one of eight discipleship guides for the Dimensions of Discipleship series. Community transformation means that we, as followers of Jesus, are actively contributing to positive change in the broader community-not just within the church-in cooperation with God's work and presence there. God is at work in the world. The question is how we as his Body can cooperate and participate in what he is doing. This study will lead you though five essential expressions of community transformation: - Participating in a faith community that reaches outside of itself - Praying for healing and reconciliation in society - Involving yourself in social justice needs in the broader community - Caring for God's creation in practical ways - Helping others cultivate healthy lives and relationships

Best Book of Spiritual Formation, from Byron Borger, Hearts and Minds Bookstore Have you joined a church or small group in hopes of experiencing real life change, only to be disappointed? Have you sat through inspiring sermons about what is possible when Christians gather together in mutually edifying relationships, only to recognize how cynical you have become after many failed attempts? Community may be one of the most over-promised, under-delivered aspects of the Christian life today. Individuals remain selfish and stuck in their ways. Communities become spiritually lifeless or even fall apart because we don't know how to experience transformation together. Transforming community does not come primarily from listening to inspiring preaching or adding another church program. It emerges as we embrace a shared commitment to the attitudes, practices and behaviors that open us to Christ in our midst. And that's where Life Together in Christ comes in. Reflecting on the story of the two disciples who meet Christ on the Emmaus Road, Ruth Haley Barton offers this interactive guide for small groups of spiritual companions who are ready to encounter Christ in transforming ways—right where they are on the road of real life.

Steer Town A Community Transformed 1970-2020, takes a brief look atthe radical transformation of a small district in Jamaica. Once the envy of other communities because of the high concentration of athletic talent, some of whom gained national and international accolades, Steer Town lost its way in the mid-90s and was recently described in the Jamaica Observer newspaper as 'Little Tivoli.' This is in reference to the volatile inner city community of Tivoli Gardens in Kingston where gun violence is the norm. In the book, the author takes the reader down memory lane and share fond memories on the early history of the community and the qualities that made the district unique. JR writes about Steer Town All-Age School and the indelible mark the school had on students from his generation. He further gives insight into why the community radically changed in the mid-1990s, and provide a blueprint of what is needed for community restoration. A community that he believes is in a state of paralysis. JR concludes that the problems Steer Town faces are not insurmountable and can be solved. However, any solution to these problems will require all the stakeholders in the community, including members of the diasporas to be on board. He concludes that Steer Town can return to peace and civility, qualities he believes the community still has in its DNA.

Training for Transformation Book 4 is a practical and accessible workbook for community development workers. Each section contains a rich selection of relevant material designed to stimulate interest and debate, including simulations, real life stories, telling statistics, news articles and poetry and drama from local communities. The authors have drawn on their direct experience of working on community development programmes in South Africa and the USA, as well as feedback from many other countries where the Training for Transformation approach has been adopted. Training for Transformation Book 4 will be ideal for adult education workers, social workers, community development workers, church workers and trade union educators, and all organizations and individuals concerned with the process of transforming society.
