This volume offers an overview of Byzantine manuscript illustration, a central branch of Byzantine art and culture. Just like written texts, illustrations bear witness to Byzantine material culture, imperial ideology and religious beliefs, as well as to the development and spread of Byzantine art. The statesman and scholar Theodore Metochites was one of the most important personalities of the fourteenth-century Byzantine Empire. A close advisor to the emperor Andronikos II and restorer of the famous monastery of Chora in Constantinople, Metochites left various writings including orations, poems, essays and commentaries on classical and religious texts, in which he discusses the numerous problems that troubled him and his contemporaries, such as the decline of the state and the tension between public life and that of the philosopher. In this book, Ioannis Polemis provides the first in-depth study of Metochites' oeuvre, revealing the complex way he represented the authorial self to critique the politics and mores of his day, whilst at the same time shielding himself from potential criticism. Byzantine Thessaloniki has often been considered in its relationship with Constantinople, as a deuteragonist vis-à-vis the capital. However, from the 11th through the 15th century the symproteuousa has often played an important role in terms of the study, preservation and circulation of learning. The present volume collects 11 papers originating in a conference held at Thessaloniki's Kentro Istorias in May 2022. Some of them offer new elements and fresh discoveries on single erudites and their work, from Michael Mitylenaios to John Pediasimos, from Demetrios Triklinios to Thomas Magister, from Matthew Blastares to Manuel Boullotes. Hagiography, schedography, lexicography, philology on ancient Greek texts, and even canonical law, are among the genres practised by Thessalonian scholars over the centuries. Other papers offer thoughts on Eustathios' didactic aims, bird's-eye views of the city's intellectual milieux in the early Palaeologan era, or of the learned circles in Manuel II's entourage. Manuscripts from the Byzantine era hand down lists of outstanding Greek authors or canons in the various literary and scientific-philosophical genres, but there has been a lack of research into their nature, chronology, origin, formation and use. The volume Παραδείγματα, the term used in rhetorical texts to designate the canons, provides a new critical edition of these lists as a basis for the topics discussed. One of the lists, hitherto thought to be unitary, turns out to be composed of two originally independent and diachronic lists, later joined into one: an older one, dating back at least in part to Alexandrian philology, and another possibly from the 5th-6th century AD with additions up to the 9th, formed between Alexandria and Constantinople. A later list of canons, referable to the 13th-14th centuries, proves to be different from the previous ones, reflecting all-Byzantine instances partly intrinsic to Byzantine orthodoxy since it includes Church Fathers and theologians, partly resulting from cultural turning points of the 11th-12th centuries, partly inspired by the Second Sophistic. The groups and authors of each list were then examined, recalling their geo-historical context, activity, production and textual tradition, and their place in Serorian scholarship. Finally, the lists were compared with the canons transposed or reformulated by Byzantine scholars and scholars. The volume may prove useful to those concerned with ancient literary and scientific-philosophical canons, the history of scholarship, the use of the classics and the Church Fathers in Byzantium.

Hochsprachliche rhetorische Texte waren ein wichtiges Mittel der sozialen Positionierung in Byzanz. Von besonderer Bedeutung war dabei die enkomiastische, d. h. lobende Dichtung. Das Buch widmet sich den enkomiastischen Gedichten des wichtigsten Dichters der Palaiologenzeit, Manuel Philes (ca. 1270 – nach 1332), dessen Werk trotz seiner Bedeutung weitestgehend unerforscht ist. Die Arbeit bietet eine Untersuchung von etwa 17.000 Versen, d.h. etwa 2/3 des von Philes überlieferten Werkes, und verbindet eine philologische mit einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Analyse. Zunächst stehen literarische Fragen, insbesondere die Gattung, Motivik und Formelemente im Zentrum. Darauf aufbauend werden die literarischen und sozialen Funktionen der Gedichte modellhaft erläutert. Schließlich werden die Umstände der Produktion und Rezeption untersucht, insbesondere die Motivationen für das Verfassen von Gedichten, die Darbringung der Texte in schriftlicher und mündlicher Form sowie Fragen der Rekontextualisierung. Diese Monographie bietet die erste komplexe Analyse von Manuel Philes’ Werk und gewährt tiefe Einblicke in das literarische und soziale Leben in Konstantinopel.
