This research provides the evaluation of the technical measurements of pavement marking materials from a two-year data collection on 2002 National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP)'s Mississippi Test Deck from June, 2002 to June 2004. The materials studied in this research were divided into permanent and temporary material groups on two different pavement surfaces -- asphalt and concrete. The retro reflectivity and durability of permanent marking materials among different surfaces, colors and groups were studied. Also the characteristics for temporary tapes, which include internal tape strength, adhesion, tackiness and dicernablity were compared and regressed. This correlation analysis is to see whether these ratings are correlated to each other. The results of this study can be used for estimating service lives of pavement marking materials. They also can be used by states to select appropriate pavement marking materials for different needs.

Performance data was collected and analyzed for the following pavement marking materials: Waterborne High-Build Paints, Forty (40) mil High-Binder Thermoplastics, and Ninety (90) mil Thermoplastics for life expectancy, application procedures, and governing policies. The data was obtained from the National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP), a nationally accredited program that test pavement marking materials. Several key controlling measures used in the data collection include in-situ data from the same geographical location experiencing the same type of weather conditions, annual average daily traffic (AADT), and whether or not the materials were installed at the same time. This research will assist the Maryland Department of Transportation in selecting pavement marking materials for application throughout Maryland's highway infrastructure. -- Abstract.

This research evaluated pavement marking performance and developed useful degradation models for thermoplastic and paint pavement markings which can help North Carolina meet the pending FHWA minimum retroreflectivity requirements. The impacts of several important factors (such as lateral location, directionality, region, and pavement roughness) on pavement marking retroreflectivity were evaluated. With two large datasets in hand, the authors determined whether these factors had significant impacts on marking retroreflectivity. Image processing techniques were used to analyze pavement marking surface glass bead density. The authors were able to explain why paint marking retroreflectivity values degraded over time by evaluating the impact of bead density on paint marking retroreflectivity. The research reviewed existing marking retroreflectivity degradation models and developed useful new models for both thermoplastic and paint pavement markings in North Carolina. The research presented a transportation asset management system framework for estimating the current and future condition of pavement markings. The research outcomes enable the North Carolina Department of Transportation to have a better understanding of thermoplastic and paint pavement marking performance, which can lead to cost saving by maximizing pavement marking service lifecycles.

The objective of this study is to provide the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) with information that will be useful in selecting cost effective pavement marking systems. This report begins with a description of available pavement marking technologies, including a discussion of performance parameters of importance and the advantages and disadvantages offered by the various technologies. A review of some of the pertinent studies completed by other states (Pennsylvania, Kansas, Minnesota, Virginia, Wyoming, North Dakota, and Idaho) on their pavement marking programs is subsequently presented. Based on the summary of the states included in this study, pavement markings such as conventional paints are viable in areas where pavement markings do not experience high levels of wear due to traffic or winter maintenance activities. In areas where more durability is required, such as intersections, highways in snowy areas, etc., durable products like epoxy paints or thermoplastics are justified. Since the MDT is able to procure epoxy paint markings for a very reasonable cost, greater use of this durable pavement marking is certainly justified, especially considering the level of wear Montana state highways experience from snowplowing and sanding. MDT investigation of the use of mid-durable paints is warranted due to increased durability and lower cost of these products. In spite of their high cost, extruded thermoplastics and preformed tapes are still viable in areas of high wear, such as intersections and urban streets, according to the results of the studies reviewed in this report.
