A study was undertaken to evaluate a method for predicting the downwash in a transverse plane behind a wing-body combination throughout an angle-of-attack range from 0 to 20 degrees. The predicted downwash was calculated by a numerical method in which an array of discrete vortices was allowed to roll up. The wing vortices were assumed to emanate from the trailing edge of the wing with their positions and strengths determined from the measured spanwise distribution of load.

It was found that at positie angles of attack the vortex sheet assumed a shape which was initially bowed upward but flattened out downstream before the rolling-up process had progressed to an appreciable degree. A comparison with theory showed that an acceptable approximation tothe downwash distribution within the distance surveyed could be obtained if the vortex sheet were assumed to be flat and the spanwise vorticity distribution were assumed to be that of the wing.

As part of a transonic research program the sensitivity of downwash at the tail plane to fairly systematic changes in wing plan form and thickness has been evaluated over a Mach number range of approximately 0.6 to 1.1, utilizing the transonic-bump technique. This paper presents a summary of information obtained from 11 transonic-bump investigations of wing and wing-fuselage configurations and compares the experimental results with theoretical estimations made for subsonic and supersonic Mach numbers.
