Like other corporations, banks want to create value and seek ways to control risk while aiming to enhance productivity and performance. This is achieved by granting credits to customers from the money deposited by the depositor, thus placing them at risk in the case of defaulting. Despite this risk, banks must continually issue credit since it is the key source of its profitability. This research study assesses the impact of credit risk management on Indian public and private banks during the 2009-2012 period. Using pooled OLS, fixed effects and random effects, the study examines credit risk management in seven private banks and seven public banks. The results show that private banks are more capitalized and more profitable than public banks. In addition, in both cases asset quality measured using non-performing assets with negative coefficients significantly influenced bank profitability. The study extrapolates the importance of regulatory capital and the importance of risk management in ensuring stability in the financial industry.

Professional management and sincere efforts towards upgrading Credit Risk Management (CRM) framework have gained reasonable pace in both the public and private sector banks alike. The present study, first of its kind, attempts to find the difference in the strength of overall CRM framework of private and public sector banks in India in quantitative terms and also identifies the specific CRM elements leading to such differences in their respective frameworks, if any. A mathematical evaluation tool, namely, CRM Index Score, comprising quantitative assessment of the current set of CRM practices relating to organization, policy and strategy, operations and systems at transaction level and operations and systems at portfolio level, the four basic elements of CRM framework, were deployed for making a comparative evaluation. The findings revealed that the strength of the overall CRM framework did not vary significantly between public and private sector banks as on the whole there existed very little difference in the scores of the public and private sector banks.

ABOUT THE BOOK Banking sector reforms in India are aimed at induction of best international practices and technological changes for competing globally. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has time and again emphasised transparency, diversification of ownership and strong corporate governance to mitigate the prospects of systemic risks in the banking sector. Banking sector reforms have supported the transition of the Indian economy to a higher growth path, while significantly improving the stability of the financial system. In comparison with the pre-reform period, the Indian banking system today is more stable and efficient. However, the gains of the past decade need to be consolidated, so that these could be translated to drive the institutions, markets and practices into a mature financial system that can meet the challenges of globalisation. The banking system would, therefore, not only need to be stable, but also supportive of still higher levels of planned investments by channelling financial resources more efficiently from surplus to deficit sectors. Competitive pressures as well as prudential regulatory requirements have made banks risk-averse as reflected in their tendency to investment in relatively risk-free gilt instruments. The behaviour and strategies of banking business need changes in favour of risk-taking even while performing core activities. Also, there is a need to ensure long-term finance to support development and growth in the economy, even as restructuring takes place through mergers and universal banking. The present book addresses issues like Basel ? II Accord guidelines, second generation banking sector reforms, cost-benefit and productivity analysis of Indian banks, danger zone banks, privatisation and comparative efficiency of Indian banks and the recent reform measures. Vital statistics regarding the Indian banking sector and the recent Annual Policy Statement, 2008-09 of the RBI has also been discussed. About the author Dr. R.K. Uppal did his M.A. in economics from Punjabi University, Patiala in 1986. Thereafter, he obtained M.Phil. degree from MDU, Rohtak in 1987 and Ph.D. degree from Punjabi University, Patiala in 2003. Specialising in banking and finance, Dr. Uppal has 11 books to his credit and has published 40 research papers on the subject in reputed national and international journals. Presently, he is head of the Department of Economics, DAV College, Malout, Punjab and Principal Investigator of a UGC-financed research project on Indian banking. The study examines the impact of credit risk components on the performance of credit risk management and the growth in non-performing assets of commercial banks in India. The data is obtained from primary and secondary sources. The primary data is collected by administering questionnaire among risk managers of Indian banks. The secondary data on non-performing assets (NPAs) of Indian banks is from annual reports and Prowess database compiled by Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). Multiple linear regression is used to estimate the models for our study. The results suggest that identification of credit risk significantly affects the credit risk performance. The results are robust as credit risk identification is negatively related to annual growth in non-performing assets or loans. There is evidence in support of a priori expectation of better credit risk performance of private banks compared to that of government banks. The study has implications for Indian banks suffering from high level of losses due to bad loans. In addition, it will have implications for the implementation of new Basel Accord norms (Basel III) by Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The high and rising level of NPAs will have adverse consequences for credit flow in the economy in the absence of appropriate intervention by government and central bank in the form of changes in institutional and regulatory infrastructure. The problems in banking and financial services sector will lead to lower industrial and aggregate economic growth, and lower (or negative) growth in employment. There is little evidence on credit risk management practices of Indian banks, and its relationship with credit risk performance and NPA growth. The need for an effective risk management system to manage credit risk assumes importance and urgency in the context of high and rising NPAs of Indian banks, and the consequences for the Indian economy.

Risk is detrimental to the financial health of the bank and could threaten its survival. To make the banking function sound and diversify the risk, it is necessary to deal with all kinds of risks related to banking. The future of banking will undoubtedly rest on risk management dynamics. Only those banks that have efficient risk management systems will survive in the market in the long run. The study attempts to analyze the risk management practices of Indian banks (Public and Private Sector) so as to infer the status of risk management in Indian banks. This will help in estimating the strength of Indian banks, their resilience to probable catastrophes, and their preparedness for uncertain events. Based upon the norms declared by the Bank of International Standards, viz., Basel norms, a questionnaire-based survey was performed to gauge the standing of Indian Banks. The primary data required for the proposed study has been gathered with the help of two questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The first questionnaire attempts to explore the perception of employees in the risk management department regarding the risk, risk management practices, and overall risk management philosophy of banks. A total number of 20 banks: 10 Public Sector, 6 Private Sector (New), and 4 Private Sector (Old) Banks have been selected for the study. So, the sample consisted of 100 respondents with 5 employees from each bank. All these respondents belong to the risk management department of the banks under study. The questionnaire is divided into a number of categories that correspond to aspects of the risk management process in Indian banks. The questionnaire includes the following sections: Risk severity, Risk Identification (RI), Risk Assessment & Analysis (RAA), Risk Management Practices (RMP), Risk Monitoring (RM), Mitigation of Risk (MTR), Credit Risk Management (CR), Market Risk Management (MR) and Operational Risk Management (OR). The questionnaire is objective in nature and seeks responses on a seven-point Likert Scale on statements from each section.

The large holdings of government securities by banks in India draw attention to their risk as interest rates are at historical low levels. This paper measures such a risk using duration and value-at-risk methods and assesses its current management by banks. The main finding is that some public sector and old private banks are vulnerable to a reversal of the interest rate cycle, while foreign and new private banks have built adequate defenses. In this regard, the paper makes a number of recommendations regarding government policies and individual bank practices to manage interest rate risk.
