The present study, first of its kind, attempts to find the difference in the strength of overall CRM framework of private and public sector banks in India in quantitative terms and also identifies the specific CRM elements leading to such differences in their respective frameworks, if any. A mathematical evaluation tool, namely, CRM Index Score, comprising quantitative assessment of the current set of CRM practices relating to organization, policy and strategy, operations and systems at transaction level and operations and systems at portfolio level, the four basic elements of CRM framework, were deployed for making a comparative evaluation. The findings revealed that the strength of the overall CRM framework did not vary significantly between public and private sector banks as on the whole there existed very little difference in the scores of the public and private sector banks.

Risk is detrimental to the financial health of the bank and could threaten its survival. To make the banking function sound and diversify the risk, it is necessary to deal with all kinds of risks related to banking. The future of banking will undoubtedly rest on risk management dynamics. Only those banks that have efficient risk management systems will survive in the market in the long run. The study attempts to analyze the risk management practices of Indian banks (Public and Private Sector) so as to infer the status of risk management in Indian banks. This will help in estimating the strength of Indian banks, their resilience to probable catastrophes, and their preparedness for uncertain events. Based upon the norms declared by the Bank of International Standards, viz., Basel norms, a questionnaire-based survey was performed to gauge the standing of Indian Banks. The primary data required for the proposed study has been gathered with the help of two questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The first questionnaire attempts to explore the perception of employees in the risk management department regarding the risk, risk management practices, and overall risk management philosophy of banks. A total number of 20 banks: 10 Public Sector, 6 Private Sector (New), and 4 Private Sector (Old) Banks have been selected for the study. So, the sample consisted of 100 respondents with 5 employees from each bank. All these respondents belong to the risk management department of the banks under study. The questionnaire is divided into a number of categories that correspond to aspects of the risk management process in Indian banks. The questionnaire includes the following sections: Risk severity, Risk Identification (RI), Risk Assessment & Analysis (RAA), Risk Management Practices (RMP), Risk Monitoring (RM), Mitigation of Risk (MTR), Credit Risk Management (CR), Market Risk Management (MR) and Operational Risk Management (OR). The questionnaire is objective in nature and seeks responses on a seven-point Likert Scale on statements from each section.

The present study attempts to investigate the impact of bank ownership on Credit Risk Management (CRM) strategic decisions in Indian banking sector by using primary data regarding CRM strategic decisions of 24 public sector banks and 11 Indian private sector banks. The study observes that CRM strategic decisions are not significantly influenced by bank ownership, except with regard to the decision regarding the unit responsible for framing CRM policy. Apparent variations in strategic decisions are observed between public sector and private sector banks with regard to some issues. The study concludes that public sector banks prefer centralization of authority in strategic decision making. It also identifies the relatively weak areas that the sample banks should focus upon to strengthen their CRM framework. Thus, the findings of the study make important contribution to the ongoing debate on the impact of bank ownership on risk management practices.

Like other corporations, banks want to create value and seek ways to control risk while aiming to enhance productivity and performance. This is achieved by granting credits to customers from the money deposited by the depositor, thus placing them at risk in the case of defaulting. Despite this risk, banks must continually issue credit since it is the key source of its profitability. This research study assesses the impact of credit risk management on Indian public and private banks during the 2009-2012 period. Using pooled OLS, fixed effects and random effects, the study examines credit risk management in seven private banks and seven public banks. The results show that private banks are more capitalized and more profitable than public banks. In addition, in both cases asset quality measured using non-performing assets with negative coefficients significantly influenced bank profitability. The study extrapolates the importance of regulatory capital and the importance of risk management in ensuring stability in the financial industry.

This paper discusses the impact of the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in the financial sector. It highlights the benefits these technologies bring in terms of financial deepening and efficiency, while raising concerns about its potential in widening the digital divide between advanced and developing economies. The paper advances the discussion on the impact of this technology by distilling and categorizing the unique risks that it could pose to the integrity and stability of the financial system, policy challenges, and potential regulatory approaches. The evolving nature of this technology and its application in finance means that the full extent of its strengths and weaknesses is yet to be fully understood. Given the risk of unexpected pitfalls, countries will need to strengthen prudential oversight.

In this paper, we provide an overview of the concerns surrounding the variations in the calculation of risk-weighted assets (RWAs) across banks and jurisdictions and how this might undermine the Basel III capital adequacy framework. We discuss the key drivers behind the differences in these calculations, drawing upon a sample of systemically important banks from Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific. We then discuss a range of policy options that could be explored to fix the actual and perceived problems with RWAs, and improve the use of risk-sensitive capital ratios.
