Developmental psychologists have long known that students are less interested in school and academic tasks with each additional year in school (Eccles & Midgely, 1989). In addition, they know that the most effective predictor of motivation at any age is self-efficacy, a student's perception of his/her academic ability in a specific domain. Factors influencing self-efficacy include: previous successful experiences, social models, the opinions of others, and one's self-perceived efficacy in relation to peers simultaneously engaged in the same tasks (Pressley & McCormick, 2007). Using a sample of 424 teachers in four rural and one urban district in Northwest Illinois, this study sought to measure differences in the motivational orientations of elementary, middle, and high school teachers. The Problems in School Questionnaire (Deci, Schwartz, Sheinman, & Ryan,1981) was administered to teachers of grades 1-12 and collected at building meetings during November and December, 2009. The results confirmed that high school teachers prefer more controlling, and less autonomy-supportive responses to common educational scenarios than do elementary and middle school teachers. The results further confirmed a positive interactive effect between a teacher's gender, grade level teaching assignment, and his/her motivational orientation for control or autonomy-support. In grades 1-8, female teachers selected responses that were more autonomy-supportive than controlling, while male teachers selected responses that were more controlling than autonomy-supportive. However, the difference between male and female teachers' autonomy-supportive responses was not significant among high school teachers. According to "Self-Determination Theory" (Deci & Ryan, 2000), human motivation is influenced by our analysis of the likelihood that a given task will increase feelings of competence, autonomy, and relatedness. This study suggests that as students progress through school, they are less likely to encounter teachers who are sensitive to these motivational needs. It is becoming increasingly clear that non-cognitive psychological processes are important for students’ school achievement, even to the point where their influence may be stronger than that exerted by the parents, teachers, or the school atmosphere itself. Non-cognitive psychological variables refer to varieties of self-beliefs and goal orientations – such as anxiety, confidence, self-efficacy, and self-concept – which are often seen as dispositional and motivational in nature. It is particularly important to highlight the role that confidence and self-efficacy play in school achievement, as these two self-beliefs are related to metacognitive processing – the awareness of what you know and what you do not know. Self-concept, meanwhile, tends to exert its influence on an individual’s choice of tertiary level courses. This case study addressed student academic intrinsic motivation during transition into middle school. The study examined one middle school that conducts a middle school transition program. The study collected data about student intrinsic motivation in reading, math, social studies, and science. The researcher explored procedures learned during the middle school transition program that students and teachers felt most directly impacted student intrinsic motivation. -- This study was an extension of Sealy’s (2012) dissertation about high school transition. The purpose of this study was to extend the generalization of the original study, build on previous research, and add related knowledge to the original study. This study contained both population and context-driven extensions and method and measurement-driven extensions. The research design remained the same as the original study. -- A mixed-methods design was used involving quantitative data from the Children’s Academic Intrinsic Motivation Inventory and examination of a transition graph. Qualitative data were collected from student focus groups, teacher interviews, and an administrator interview. Through analysis of data collected, student intrinsic motivation in core courses and general orientation to learning were examined. -- For the study middle school, students showed the highest levels of intrinsic motivation in social studies partially because of challenging assignments. Math also had high academic intrinsic motivation levels. Reading had the lowest academic intrinsic motivation. Students did not find reading challenging and appeared oversaturated with reading at the elementary school level. One important factor for intrinsic motivation to learn subjects was the teacher. -- When compared to the replicated study, middle school students showed more intrinsic motivation than high school students.
