This study investigates the pragmatic functions of the discourse markers French bon and Spanish bueno, both of which can be translated as 0́well', by analyzing their use in two corpora of spontaneous speech. The uniqueness of this study is threefold. The first defining feature is the cross-linguistic comparison of discourse markers of the same origin in two different languages. Second is the observation that the discourse-navigating functions of bon and bueno likely stem from their inherited evaluative meaning and their ability to establish communal agreement between speakers. The third original feature is the quantification of the functions of these markers in each language in order to facilitate a comparison of their functions' frequencies. The most common functions of bon are to introduce concluding statements and, secondly, to introduce critiques. The most common functions of Spanish bueno include introducing a critique and, secondly, introducing or taking up a new topic.

While discourse markers have been examined in some detail, little is known about their usage by non-native speakers. This book provides valuable insights into the functions of four discourse markers (so, well, you know and like) in native and non-native English discourse, adding to both discourse marker literature and to studies in the pragmatics of learner language. It presents a thorough analysis on the basis of a substantial parallel corpus of spoken language. In this corpus, American students who are native speakers of English and German non-native speakers of English retell and discuss a silent movie. Each of the main chapters of the book is dedicated to one discourse marker, giving a detailed analysis of the functions this discourse marker fulfills in the corpus and a quantitative comparison between the two speaker groups. The book also develops a two-level model of discourse marker functions comprising a textual and an interactional level.

There is an increasing body of research literature on discourse markers (DMs). The majority of the studies focus on uses of DMs by native English speakers. As English is becoming the international language and used by more and more non-native speakers, there is a need to examine the emerging discourse features of the English used by them including the uses of DMs. This study examines non-native Chinese English speakers' uses of DMs. Data analysis includes a comparison of the uses of seven DMs: "and, but, so, because, well, you know and I mean" by Chinese and native English speakers in an English TV interview in terms of frequency and function. It is found out that the Chinese speakers' English competence, social background and English media's special role in China could help explain the found similarities and differences between two groups of English speakers. The study could help provide more understanding towards DMs' using and learning by L2 speakers, which is a relatively under-researched area and should be specially useful to professionals who are interested in analyzing L2 speaker's spoken discourse pattern, especially their uses of DMs.

The aim of this volume is to bring together researchers interested in investigating the role that Discourse Markers play in language production and comprehension from an experimental or corpus-based perspective. In any kind of human communication, Discourse Markers are part of the game. This omnipresence informs us of a crucial inherent aspect of human language. Yet, as a linguistic category, Discourse Markers remain underdetermined. Spoken language is characterized by the occurrence of linguistic devices such as discourse markers (e.g. so, well, you know, I mean) and other so-called “disfluent” phenomena, which reflect the temporal nature of the cognitive mechanisms underlying speech production and comprehension. The purpose of this book is to distinguish between strategic vs. symptomatic uses of these markers on the basis of their combination, function and distribution across several registers in English and French. Through deep quantitative and qualitative analyses of manually annotated features in the new DisFrEn corpus, this usage-based study provides (i) an exhaustive portrait of discourse markers in English and French and (ii) a scale of (dis)fluency against which different configurations of discourse markers can be diagnosed as rather fluent or disfluent.
