Excerpt from A Manual of English Literature In general, I _may say that the substance Of this Manual is Professor Morley's, and that the construction Of it is mine. Even with reference to the substance Of the book, however, I Ought to explain that it differs in many, respects from the First Sketch. I have retained from that work the essential part Of'every thing bearing directly upon English literature; but I have tried to leave out every thing whose relation to English literature was either indirect, or, for American readers, bewildering: such as, on the one hand, extended references to Italian, French, and Spanish literatures; or, on the other hand, a multitude Of. Incidental allusions - genealogical, domestic, local, and titular - that would perplex no student in England, but are sure to perplex most students in America. But my changes in the substance Of the First Sketch have not been confined to those Of omission. Wherever I. Thought it desirable, I have freely added materials not in the original work: for example, all Of the Introduction excepting the first section several pages Of the chapters on the fifteenth century; the larger part of the account Of the nineteenth century; besides many Of the paragraphs Of introduction and transition scattered through the book. But the most Of my work upon the substance Of this Manual cannot be here Specified; it consists Of innumerable small bits Of alteration and addition, fitted in and mixed up with the original materials, and no longer distinguishable from them except by a careful collation 'of the two books-item by item. Excerpt from English Literature, Considered as an Interpreter of English History: Designed as a Manual of Instruction It will be observed that the remoter periods of the literature are those in which the historic teachings are the most distinctly visible we see them from a vantage ground, in their full scope, and in the interrelations of their parts. Although in the more modern periods the number of writers is greatly increased, we are too near to discern the entire period, and are in danger of becoming partisans, by reason of our limited view. Especially is this true of the age in which we live. Contemporary history is but party-chronicle the true philosophic history can only be written when distance and elevation give due scope to our vision. The principle I have laid down is best illustrated by the great literary masters. Those of less degree have been treated at less length, and many of them will be found in the smaller print, to save space. Those who study the book should study the small print as carefully as the other. After a somewhat elaborate exposition of English literature, I could not induce myself to tack on an inadequate chapter on. American literature; and, besides, I think that to treat the two subjects in one volume would be as incongruous as to write a joint biography of Marlborough and Washington. American literature is too great and noble, and has had too marvelous a development to be made an appendix to English literature. Excerpt from A History of English Literature This book aims to provide a general manual of English Literature for students in colleges and universities and others beyond the high-school age. The first purposes of every such book must be to outline the development of the literature with due regard to national life, and to give appreciative interpretation of the work of the most im portant authors. I have written the present volume be cause I have found no other that, to my mind, combines satisfactory accomplishment of these ends with a selec tion of authors sufficiently limited for clearness and with adequate accuracy and fulness of details, biographical and other. A manual, it seems to me, should supply a sys tematic statement of the important facts, so that the greater part of the student's time, in class and without, may be left free for the study of the literature itself. I hope that the book may prove adaptable to various methods and conditions of work. Experience has suggested the brief introductory statement of main literary prin ciples, too often taken for granted by teachers, with much resulting haziness in the student's mind. The list of as signments and questions at the end is intended, of course, to be freely treated. I hope that the list of available inexpensive editions of the chief authors may suggest a practical method of providing the material, especially for colleges which can provide enough copies for class use. Poets, of course, may be satisfactorily read in volumes of selections; but to me, at least, a book of brief extracts from twenty or a hundred prose authors is an absurdity. Perhaps I may venture to add that personally I find it ad visable to pass hastily over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and so gain as much time as possible for the nineteenth. But in these examinations English literature has never proved a particularly attractive subject; and in the second edition of 1880 an attempt was made to extend the utility of the book as a work of reference. In this character it achieved a certain success, and went out of print. In 1895 the publishers decided to re issue it with such revision and supplement as might serve to bring it down to the present date. This task, rendered more formidable by two-and-twenty years of dictionaries biographies, histories, and special monographs, the original compiler had neither the leisure nor the inclination to undertake; and with his entire concurrence, it was entrusted to the capable and experienced hands of Mr. W.
