Our sensory system consists of multiple processing stages, and its response characteristics change based on recent stimulus history. Although much is known about both the hierarchical nature and the adaptability of the sensory system, it remains unclear how this multilevel neural system adapts to changes in the environment and leads to various perceptual consequences. In my dissertation, I focus on adaptation of the visual motion system. I aim to address the following questions: (I) Can the adaptation of the hierarchical motion system be studied at individual levels of processing? (II) How does the hierarchical motion system adapt and produce perceptual aftereffects? (III) What is the computational principle that underlies multilevel adaptation in the motion system? I designed a novel psychophysical paradigm to study how adaptation of individual levels of motion processing may contribute in producing various forms of perceptual aftereffects. My psychophysical findings suggest that perceptual aftereffects depend on the adaptation of multiple stages of processing, each may adapt based on its own computational principle. Finally, I used a multilayer network model to simultaneously explain different adaptation-induced neural changes that have been observed at different processing levels. Differences in neural adaptation at the local and the global levels of motion processing can be explained from a natural-statistics perceptive: neurons at different levels are holding different assumptions about natural sensory statistics, causing them to react differently in response to the same adapting environment. Taken together, findings from this dissertation illustrate the importance of understanding sensory adaptation from a hierarchical-processing perspective, which will shed more lights on the big picture of sensory processing.

This book presents a realist, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary theory of immediate awareness showing it is the most primitive cognitive network underlying all our natural intelligence. Including preattentive and attention processes, as well as primitive relations of the senses, imagination and memory, immediate awareness is a kind of knowing deeply embedded and interwoven throughout our multiple kinds of natural intelligence. It permits as well as drives our knowing how, our bodily intelligence. Against the Cartesian mind-body split found in earlier and current theories, the author shows how immediate awareness permits emergent properties of mind in multilayered primitive relations of touching and moving in bodily kinesthetic intelligence. Contrary to existing theories, she argues that sensation is not cognitively "neutral", nor does it require a "representation" in order to be accessible to cognitive processes. Dr. Estep presents empirical evidence and arguments that sensation of immediate awareness is itself cognitive and embedded within our sensory and somatosensory-motor processes. The author's aim is to turn to a more geometric approach to natural intelligence, as opposed to the prevalent symbol-based view. In this approach, she uses random Boolean networks as a way of obtaining law-like properties of those primitive relations of immediate awareness in terms of dynamical systems theory. This demonstrates the properties of self-organization and adaptation of immediate awareness without committing one to a physicalist/materialist theory. It gives us a way of understanding core properties of our own inner conscious lives, and of understanding the smooth and seamless sensitivity of primitive sensory and somatosensory-motor awareness. Dr. Estep's theory of immediate awareness also shows that the computational view of mind is wrong. Though our minds do classify, classification is not all they do. Our immediate awareness indexically selects sui generis objects that are unique and of no kind or class. The influence of nominalism and narrow naturalist theories have resulted in extremely narrow concepts of the human knowing mind and intelligence, leaving out immediate awareness altogether. We slip into subtle nominalist fallacies when we take our language metaphors – and language itself – too far.

"This dissertation investigates the computational principles that govern multisensory processing. Multisensory processing is ubiquitous within the human nervous system, as we are constantly subjected to multiple sensations at any given moment. The human observer provides an excellent model system to investigate how to intelligently process streams of information from multiple sensory channels. Equally important components of multisensory processing are deciding 1.) what signals come from disparate sources and should be processed independently, and 2.) what signals come from a common source and should be integrated. If the signals are to be integrated, the subsequent problem is determining how the information should be integrated to improve performance. I aim to further the development of a unified computational theory that can explain these critical components of multisensory processing. The computational theories in this dissertation are tested against human performance in perceptual experiments. First, I investigate if there is a general principle that can account for processing sensory information across the three modalities of vision, audition, and touch. The findings of the experiment demonstrate that multisensory processing across three modalities can be well characterized by a Bayesian model of perception that does not a priori assume that the sensory signals are caused by the same source. The second group of experiments investigates the process of localizing auditory and visual stimuli in space. I was specifically interested in how Bayesian models of sensory processing characterize forms of multisensory recalibration. The results support an adaptation model where small consistent crossmodal deviations are likely to be attributed to sensory errors and the likelihood of sensory encoding is recalibrated, while larger inconsistent errors can be attributed to the causal structure of the environment. I also investigate the strategy used for perceptual decision making in spatial localization task. The results show that the majority of observers' responses are best characterized by a probability matching strategy as opposed to a commonly assumed strategy of minimizing the mean squared error. Our results demonstrate that under certain conditions, perceptual judgments can be subjected to similar heuristics that are more commonly observed in cognitive decision making, and underscore the importance of considering alternative objectives when evaluating perceptual performance."--Abstract.
