Poland is a country which sporadically hits the headlines of the Anglo-Saxon world. It has suffered the dubious distinction of being wiped off the political map in 1795 to be resurrected after the First World War only to suffer apparent annihilation during the Second, with reduction to satellite status of the Soviet Union only to emerge in the van of resistance to Soviet domination during the 1980s. Yet the history of Poland remains comparatively little known. This book offers a brief, non-specialist introduction to Polish history, from medieval times to the present day, and is the only short history of Poland available in English. It concentrates essentially on political development which, particularly for the pre-nineteenth-century period, still remains little known to English readers. The book also includes much material on relations with Germany, Russia, the Ukraine, Lithuania, and other neighbouring states.

The second edition of this guide to Poland has been updated to take account of the years from 1989–2005. This period marked its liberation from the Soviet Union, the birth of Poland's 'Third Republic' and, recently, its accession to the European Union in 2004. Poland's history has been marked by its resilience. Once a dominant force in central and eastern Europe and home to a remarkable experiment in consensual politics, it was excised from the map by its neighbours in 1795. Resurrected in 1918, partitioned afresh during the Second World War, it survived to become a satellite of the Soviet Union. Yet in the 1980s, it was Poland which blazed the trail in casting off communism, and was finally able to reassert its Christian heritage. With its updated bibliography and new chronology, the book is the ideal companion for all looking for a comprehensive survey of this fascinating country.

"A History of Poland is a examination of the rise of a state which, throughout centuries, spanned the civilizations of the West and East. Prazmowska explains the roots of Polish Christianity and also offers a analysis of the origins and background to the development of a deeply patriotic nation, discussing the political and cultural roots of Polish nationalism while at the same time demonstrating why the Polish Question has been an insoluble problem in European politics." "Placing the complex history of Poland in the context of most major European events, this guide fully explains the country's place in European consciousness."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Based partly on a Kent State U. Open Theatre conference in 1983 which brought together writers, directors, and critics who had been integral to the New York theatre scene of the 1960s and 1970s, this study analyzes the creative shifts of that period. After profiling the American playwright-director before 1960, Gardner (playwriting, American drama, Ohio Wesleyan U.) traces how the Vietnam War, other social issues, and increased funding cued decentralization and experimentation in dramatic styles (e.g., in regional and off-off Broadway theatre), and the emergence of the new playwright-director. Some 90 pages are devoted to appendices listing playwright-directed productions and biographical data on selected playwright-directors. c. Book News Inc.

Excerpt from A Brief History of Poland This is not the book of an investigator. It is simply an attempt to present the results of much work already done by others on a difficult and complicated subject, in such a way as to reach and interest the many to whom Poland's great past, as well as her present problems and their wide significance, are practically unknown. It is impossible to mention all the many authorities whose work has contributed to the preparation of this book, but I must gratefully acknowledge my special debt to Ropell and Caro's Geschichte Polens, still the best general history of Poland for the period it covers; to the books and articles of Mr. R. Nisbet Bain on many Slavonic subjects; and to Mr. Robert Howard Lord, without whose authoritative and illuminating work. The Second Partition of Poland, much of this book could scarcely have been written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
