Descartes S Method Of Doubt written by Janet Broughton and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-10 with Philosophy categories.
Descartes thought that we could achieve absolute certainty by starting with radical doubt. He adopts this strategy in the Meditations on First Philosophy, where he raises sweeping doubts with the famous dream argument and the hypothesis of an evil demon. But why did Descartes think we should take these exaggerated doubts seriously? And if we do take them seriously, how did he think any of our beliefs could ever escape them? Janet Broughton undertakes a close study of Descartes's first three meditations to answer these questions and to present a fresh way of understanding precisely what Descartes was up to. Broughton first contrasts Descartes's doubts with those of the ancient skeptics, arguing that Cartesian doubt has a novel structure and a distinctive relation to the commonsense outlook of everyday life. She then argues that Descartes pursues absolute certainty by uncovering the conditions that make his radical doubt possible. She gives a unified account of how Descartes uses this strategy, first to find certainty about his own existence and then to argue that God exists. Drawing on this analysis, Broughton provides a new way to understand Descartes's insistence that he hasn't argued in a circle, and she measures his ambitions against those of contemporary philosophers who use transcendental arguments in their efforts to defeat skepticism. The book is a powerful contribution both to the history of philosophy and to current debates in epistemology.

The Will To Doubt written by Alfred H. Lloyd and has been published by DigiCat this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-04 with Philosophy categories.
In "The Will to Doubt," Alfred H. Lloyd masterfully navigates the philosophical landscape of skepticism and inquiry, challenging readers to interrogate the very foundations of their beliefs. Employing a blend of analytical prose and reflective discourse, Lloyd delves into the principle of doubt as not merely a negation of certainty but as a transformative catalyst for intellectual growth. Situated within the broader literary tradition that embraces existential and philosophical questioning, this work emerges as a vital contribution to early 20th-century thought, resonating with contemporaries who grappled with the implications of modernity and the search for truth in an increasingly complex world. Alfred H. Lloyd was a prominent philosopher and educator at the University of Michigan, renowned for his contributions to ethics and epistemology. His engagement with skepticism stems from a rich intellectual background that encompassed both rigorous academic inquiry and a keen interest in the philosophical underpinnings of human experience. Lloyd's ability to traverse diverse philosophical landscapes reflects his commitment to understanding and articulating the role of doubt in the pursuit of knowledge and personal integrity. I highly recommend "The Will to Doubt" to anyone interested in philosophy, critical thinking, or the exploration of personal beliefs. Lloyd's incisive reflections encourage readers to embrace the power of doubt as a necessary precursor to enlightenment, making this work an invaluable resource for scholars and inquisitive minds alike.

The Wisdom To Doubt written by J. L. Schellenberg and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-15 with Philosophy categories.
The Wisdom to Doubt is a major contribution to the contemporary literature on the epistemology of religious belief. Continuing the inquiry begun in his previous book, Prolegomena to a Philosophy of Religion, J. L. Schellenberg here argues that given our limitations and especially our immaturity as a species, there is no reasonable choice but to withhold judgment about the existence of an ultimate salvific reality. Schellenberg defends this conclusion against arguments from religious experience and naturalistic arguments that might seem to make either religious belief or religious disbelief preferable to his skeptical stance. In so doing, he canvasses virtually all of the important recent work on the epistemology of religion. Of particular interest is his call for at least skepticism about theism, the most common religious claim among philosophers. The Wisdom to Doubt expands the author's well-known hiddenness argument against theism and situates it within a larger atheistic argument, itself made to serve the purposes of his broader skeptical case. That case need not, on Schellenberg's view, lead to a dead end but rather functions as a gateway to important new insights about intellectual tasks and religious possibilities.

Readers who wrestle with their faith will welcome Boyd's message that experiencing a life-transforming relationship with Christ is possible, even with unresolved questions about the Bible, theology, and ethics. Boyd shares stories of his own painful journey, and stories of those to whom he has ministered, with a poignant honesty that will resonate with readers of all ages.
