A rare glimpse into the mind of one of Mexico's noted modern architects Luis Barragán (1902-1985) was a preeminent Mexican architect known for spare formulations and documentation of his design ideas. He was born in Guadalajara, where he practiced in the early years of his career, and later traveled extensively in Europe, where he became influenced by concepts of early twentieth-century modernism. His ideas were especially shaped by the time he spent with Le Corbusier. He developed a design aesthetic that elevated the serenity of spaces above functionality. He spent most of his career in Mexico City, and his work went widely unrecognized for most of his life, though he enjoyed quiet acclaim from Louis Kahn, Álvaro Siza, and other prominent figures. His home and studio in Mexico City are a popular museum and have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Yet little is known about this influential and highly regarded modern architect. A Conversation with Luis Barragán, an insightful interview conducted by Alejandro Ramírez Ugarte in 1962, offers an account of Barragán's career, travels, and primary aesthetic and architectural design concerns. Mexico City became one of the centers of architectural modernism in the Americas in the first half of the twentieth century. Invigorated by insights drawn from the first published histories of Mexican colonial architecture, which suggested that Mexico possessed a distinctive architecture and culture, beginning in the 1920s a new generation of architects created profoundly visual modern buildings intended to convey Mexico's unique cultural character. By midcentury these architects and their students had rewritten the country's architectural history and transformed the capital into a metropolis where new buildings that evoked pre-conquest, colonial, and International Style architecture coexisted. Through an exploration of schools, a university campus, a government ministry, a workers' park, and houses for Diego Rivera and Luis Barragan, Kathryn O'Rourke offers a new interpretation of modern architecture in the Mexican capital, showing close links between design, evolving understandings of national architectural history, folk art, and social reform. This book demonstrates why creating a distinctively Mexican architecture captivated architects whose work was formally dissimilar, and how that concern became central to the profession.

Stretching lengths of yarn across interior spaces, American artist Fred Sandback (1943–2003) created expansive works that underscore the physical presence of the viewer. This book, the first major study of Sandback, explores the full range of his art, which not only disrupts traditional conceptions of material presence, but also stages an ethics of interaction between object and observer. Drawing on Sandback’s substantial archive, Edward A. Vazquez demonstrates that the artist’s work—with all its physical slightness and attentiveness to place, as well as its relationship to minimal and conceptual art of the 1960s—creates a link between viewers and space that is best understood as sculptural even as it almost surpasses physical form.
