'I don't think I've seen a more impressive collection of Australian writers in a single book.' Stephen Romei, The Australian One of the central moral issues of our time is the question of asylum seekers, arguably the most controversial subject in Australia today. In this landmark anthology, twenty-seven of Australia's finest writers have focused their intelligence and creativity on the theme of the dispossessed, bringing a whole new perspective of depth and truthfulness to what has become a fraught, distorted war of words. This anthology confirms that the experience of seeking asylum – the journeys of escape from death, starvation, poverty or terror to an imagined paradise – is part of the Australian mindset and deeply embedded in our culture and personal histories. A Country Too Far is a tour de force of stunning fiction, memoir, poetry and essays. Edited by award-winning writers Rosie Scott and Tom Keneally, and featuring contributors including Anna Funder, Christos Tsiolkas, Elliot Perlman, Gail Jones, Raimond Gaita, Les Murray, Rodney Hall and Geraldine Brooks, this rich anthology is by turns thoughtful, fierce, evocative, lyrical and moving, and always extraordinarily powerful. A Country Too Far makes an indispensable contribution to the national debate. 'There is a passion about the book, and a moral, emotional and artistic synergy that makes for deeply satisfying reading. It is as if the contributors have themselves felt dispossessed, not of their land, but of the idea of their own country, and have seized the opportunity to reclaim it . . . A fine book like A Country Too Far, one that inspires both compassion and anger, can change the way people think and act, and encourage them to expect more from themselves and their nation.' Sydney Morning Herald 'A Country Too Far represents the varied and vibrant voice of writers speaking out as Australia contravenes its obligations to refugees. Its stories, poems, memoirs and essays collect their work into an eloquent refusal of silence in the face of, as John Tranter writes: 'this/fetch of disparate peoples/assigned to come possessionless into massive/light.' Weekend Australian 'Brilliant testimony from some of our finest writers.' Anne Deveson 'The strength of the book is its range of genres and depth of perspective . . . a book to pass on to others who don't necessarily share its perspective or those who do but need sustenance. But it's also a book for holding onto and dipping into again . . . A Country Too Far is part of a literary tradition in which authors attempt to face the social context in which they live . . . to resist political word games with other words.' The Guardian 'With asylum seekers high on Australia's moral, social and political agenda, you'll want to make room on your reading list for A Country Too Far . . . [these] 27 Australian poets, authors and journalists . . . have thoughtfully and beautifully expressed their ideas and views on the complexities of the refugee issue.' InStyle 'A stunning anthology and searing moral work that beautifully gives voice to the voiceless without preaching at any point . . . In a political era where there appears to be no bottom to the barrel of immigration policy, A Country Too Far is timely, important and wise.' readings.com.au 'Don't buy a copy of this book. Buy two. Send one to a federal politician.' Newcastle Herald 'A Country Too Far, co-edited by Rosie Scott and Tom Keneally, is a timely attempt to set the record straight about asylum seekers in Australia, to counter the negative media propaganda and to protest at the government's treatment of them. Featuring some of Australia's finest writers, it is an immensely readable, humane collection of fiction, memoir, poetry and essays.' Lucy Popescu, huffingtonpost.co.uk 'Profoundly important. It deftly and eloquently touches on so many of the key tensions and issues in this debate . . . We can only hope that this collection is widely read and that it stirs within us a desire to reclaim the compassion that we once had and demand from our leaders a more humane policy.' Sydney Review of Books 'So disturbing and awakening, it is capable of changing even the most firmly cemented opinions.' New Standpoints

The late Julius Kambarage Nyerere was nicknamed 'Musa' (Moses) during the later, post-independence years for leading his people from slavery and guiding them toward a free land of prosperity - the Promised Land. The Tanzanian odyssey chronicled in this book, which first appeared ten years ago as Tanzanians to the Promised Land, has been updated with new research. The author- also an engineer and a journalist- offers an enlightened and unbiased discussion of the journey and both sides of the contributions - successes and failures - made by former presidents and their systems of administration: the late Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere, Alhajj Ali H. Mwinyi, and Mr. Benjamin W. Mkapa. Tanzanians' hopes and expectations of the incumbent president, H.E. Mr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, are also discussed. It is not intended as a political campaign of any kind, for any party or any individual. As a brief, yet comprehensive guide to the understanding of our nation's political and economic history, it puts forward suggestions concerning important areas of the country's economic development. Nyerere unfortunately didn't live to see his people arrive at the hoped-for destination, and I. J. Werrema's original inspiration to write, at forty years of independence, is sustained because after fifty years The Promised Land is Still Too Far.

Environmentally-sustainable tourism or ecotourism has become a major area of interest for governments, the private sector and international lending institutions. It is regarded as a way of allowing economic development whilst protecting against environmental degradation, especially in those countries with fragile ecosystems. However, despite the beneficial intentions of ecotourism, it tends to be regarded uncritically by environmental organizations, governments and the private sector alike. Rosaleen Duffy presents this analysis of ecotourism, linking it with environmental ideologies and the politics of North-South relations. By the extensive use of case study and interview material, she formulates ideas and proposals that should be important for the development of ecotourism around the globe.

Several years ago, the spaceship Genesis was sent out on Earth's first mission to other solar systems to seek out the possibility of life, and even intelligent life on other worlds. That mission did indeed find life to be abundant in the heavens, and the Genesis ship found itself in a great expanse of space with no heavenly bodies. They turned back, fearing they might be headed for a black hole. When I returned to Earth, the scientists were very puzzled. The scientists could not believe the presence of a void in that sector of space. The spaceship Gemini was built and launched to find an answer to that question. The Gemini did in fact prove the existence of that black void but then returned to Earth with many more questions than answers. Perhaps you may have an answer. This book effectively becomes a sequel to The Genesis Mission. Certain ideas put forth in Genesis left things unanswered. This book attempts to cover the possibilities that scientists would want answers to questions which arose in The Genesis Mission.

The personal papers of one of feminism’s most passionate leaders, with a new preface by the author As an activist for social justice, Robin Morgan has acquired a reputation for strong convictions and a life-affirming way of expressing them through writing. Nowhere is this more evident than in Going Too Far, which takes us behind the scenes in Morgan’s life and in the women’s movement until 1977. We watch the development of an organizer who is a complex thinker while Morgan evolves as a mother, leader, writer, and activist. Morgan’s keen eye is trained on all aspects of modern feminism, and this is reflected in the juxtaposition of the journal entries and letters of her personal life with the essays and polemics that shape her public persona. Her opinions on marriage, love, religion, pornography, and art are as utterly fresh and timely today as they were decades ago. Her growing wisdom and depth of perception are apparent in the book’s progression, and her last chapters, focused on what she terms the “metaphysics of feminism,” will change a reader’s world view for the better—and forever.

Has Globalization Gone Too Far written by Dani Rodrik and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-03-01 with Political Science categories.

Globalization is exposing social fissures between those with the education, skills, and mobility to flourish in an unfettered world market—the apparent "winners"—and those without. These apparent "losers" are increasingly anxious about their standards of living and their precarious place in an integrated world economy. The result is severe tension between the market and broad sectors of society, with governments caught in the middle. Compounding the very real problems that need to be addressed by all involved, the knee-jerk rhetoric of both sides threatens to crowd out rational debate. From the United States to Europe to Asia, positions are hardening. Dani Rodrik brings a clear and reasoned voice to these questions. Has Globalization Gone Too Far? takes an unblinking and objective look at the benefits—and risks—of international economic integration, and criticizes mainstream economists for downplaying its dangers. It also makes a unique and persuasive case that the "winners" have as much at stake from the possible consequences of social instability as the "losers." As Rodrik points out, ". . . social disintegration is not a spectator sport—those on the sidelines also get splashed with mud from the field. Ultimately, the deepening of social fissures can harm all." President Clinton read the book and it provided the conceptual basis for the trade/IMF portions of his State of the Union message in January 1998.

In1975, Lazslo Toth, a US citizen and then director of technical research at the Great Western Sugar Company in Colorado, was visiting his native country of Yugoslavia to work on its continuing technical cooperation with other European nations. As part of this effort, he had agreed to provide photographs of a Yugoslav sugar plant. During this visit to his hometown of Vrbas, Toth was shocked to find himself arrested by the Yugoslav State Security, charged with spying as a CIA agent, tried in a kangaroo court, and sentenced to seven years in the notorious maximum-security prison Sremska Mitrovica. Stars Too Far describes his harrowing experiences and how the ensuing struggle for his freedom, involving such key figures as President Gerald Ford and Foreign Secretary Henry Kissinger, led to one of the lowest points in relations between the American and the Yugoslav governments since World War II. The story of his rescue and eventual release from behind the Iron Curtain provides new insight and unprecedented access into one of the fiercest diplomatic clashes between Tito’s communist Yugoslavia and the Ford administration.
