No contexto pós-colonial do século XIX, um período em que as recém-emancipadas nações sul americanas buscavam consolidar-se política e culturalmente, a imagem de Dante Alighieri cruzou o Atlântico, atravessou os trópicos e alcançou a parte sul das Américas. Seu espírito renovador veio compor o discurso nacional de parcelas significativas dos intelectuais e escritores do continente, em especial, na segunda metade do oitocentos, momento que coincide com o Risorgimento italiano. Entre os letrados que tomaram emprestado a voz de Dante para somá-la ao seu próprio discurso sobre a construção de uma identidade para seus países, destacam-se o imperador do Brasil, Dom Pedro II, e o presidente da Argentina, Bartolomé Mitre. Ambos mantiveram com o poeta italiano uma relação que perpassou suas vidas e dele traduziram a Divina Comédia. A imagem do L'altissimo poeta construída pelos dois líderes, e por uma gama importante de intelectuais do período, foi o resultado do objetivo assumido por eles de construir símbolos e mitos que dessem sustentação a um projeto de consolidação da nação. Assim, o objetivo principal deste livro é buscar no processo criativo dos dois governantes-escritores indícios de intervenções para construir uma imagem de Dante que se somasse à narrativa que ambos articulavam para a consolidação político-cultural de suas nações. Examinando, assim, em que medida a imagem construída do poeta fiorentino foi um resultado das intencionalidades que perpassava o objetivo das suas escrituras.

This collection addresses the complex process by which translation and other forms of rewriting have contributed to canon formation, revision, destabilization, and dismantlement. Through the play between version and subversion, which is inherent to any form of rewriting, these essays – focusing on translations since the sixteenth century down to the present day – stress the role of translation and adaptation as potentially transformative mediations, capable of shaping and undermining identities. Such manipulation is deeply ambivalent, since it can be used as a means of disseminating the ideology of oppressive regimes at the expense of the source text; but it can also serve to garner attention to marginalised texts. This tense interplay between political, social, and aesthetic purposes almost inevitably generates discontents, which may turn out to be the outcome of translation in general.
