One might write continuously while he lived for or against Socialism and yet at the end of a long and misspent life have said nothing that others had not said before him. Nevertheless, new generations come on and have to learn about Socialism as they learn about other things, for there always have been and always will be Socialists. It is a habit of mind which becomes fixed in a certain number of each generation; and succeeding generations seem to prefer fresh statements of the theory to the study of the ancient texts. Besides, Socialistic endeavor, while its ultimate object in all ages is the same, assumes different forms at different periods and is best dealt with in terms of the day. I am opposed to Socialism because of its inhumanity; because it saps the vitality of the human race which has no vitality to spare; because it lulls to indolence those who must struggle to survive; because the theories of good men who are enthralled by its delusions are made the excuse of the wicked who would rather plunder than work; because it stops enterprise, promotes laziness, exalts inefficiency, inspires hatred, checks production, assures waste and instills into the souls of the unfortunate and the weak hopes impossible of fruition whose inevitable blasting will add to the bitterness of their lot.

"A Critique of Socialism: Read Before The Ruskin Club of Oakland California, 1905" by George R. Sims George Robert Sims was an English journalist, poet, dramatist, novelist and bon vivant. Sims began writing lively humour and satiric pieces for Fun magazine and The Referee, but he was soon concentrating on social reform, particularly the plight of the poor in London's slums. This book was initially intended as a speech to be read out at the Ruskin Club of Oakland near San Francisco in 1905, before the likes of the Soviet Union, before Stalin and Lenin, even before the October Revolution and the end of the Tzars which made socialism a touchy topic.

Though it may be surprising in today's political context, in which the term "socialism" is often uttered like a profane insult, this political school of thought was quite popular in the early twentieth century and gained a significant amount of traction among prominent thinkers and leaders. In this concise volume, author Edward F. Adams presents two stinging critiques of socialism, and many of his arguments remain just as compelling nearly a century later.

Excerpt from The Inhumanity of Socialism: The Case Against Socialism a Critique of Socialism Some years ago I was invited to.dine with and address a charming group of Socialists com prising the Ruskin Club of Oakland. We had a joyful evening and I read to them 'a Critique of Socialism 'which forms the second part of this volume. It was published in by Paul Elder and Company, but almost the entire edition was burned in our great fire of As there are still inquiries for it, it is thought best to republish it. Obviously it was primarily intended to amuse my hosts, but there is some sense in it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An eloquent critique of socialism, this book offers a powerful argument against the socialist ideology that was gaining prominence in the early 20th century. Through a combination of historical analysis and contemporary commentary, Adams makes a compelling case for the superiority of free-market capitalism over socialism. This book provides a comprehensive overview of historical and international debates on the theory of “labor money” or “labor notes.” These debates exist in a triangular context of market socialism, communism (community-based socialism), and local currency, joining numerous socialists, anarchists, and Marx and Engels. Labor note theory encompasses theoretical, ideological, and practical doctrines aimed at designing a fair and desirable labor-based market or non-market economy by reforming the monetary and credit system. This theory was considered an unfeasible utopian idea in the context of orthodox Marxism, which is typically based on a historical study of surplus value doctrines. However, this book eschews Marx’s critique of “labor money” that limits the debate regarding a concrete alternative society, and instead proposes practical and gradual approaches to social reform by scrutinizing the primary sources of labor money theories and practical experiences and reconstructs their theoretical relationships.
