Technological innovations occasionally arise that are so distinctive that they have the potential to render previous products or services obsolete in a given technological sector. Technological discontinuities---radical innovations in a given technological sector---periodically occur as part of the process of technological evolution. Such events may lead to the disruption of established technology-based firms in similar, but potentially outdated, technology sectors. By this process, the technological discontinuity transitions to a disruptive technology. In this dissertation it is hypothesized that the degree to which discontinuities become disruption events will depend on the nature of the firm facing the technological shift, the degree to which the incumbent firm's core-competencies align with the actual, or perceived requirements of the new technology, and the timing of detection of the discontinuity event in relation to the establishment of an emerging marketplace for the new technology. Firms based on the previous generation of technology may struggle to incorporate the new technology into their product lines, or disregard the new innovation as being undesirable to their existing customer base. How companies react to such discontinuous technologies will determine if the new technology will become a disruptive force to the profitability or continued existence of established firms in a given market segment. Technological discontinuities are an unavoidable fact of business life, but the process by which these discontinuities transition into firm disruptions is not one that is inevitable for all firms facing such a shift in their technological horizons. Effective assessments of the risk posed by the discontinuity, and the accurate communication of information regarding the event inside an organization self-aware enough to recognize the nature of the threat, will help management teams to formulate effective strategies for coping with the changes required to compete in a new market. This thesis examines the factors that may contribute toward the threat of firm disruption from discontinuous technological innovations, explores the development of a prototype tool for disruption assessment, and examines management strategies for countering the threat and capitalizing on the opportunities inherent in these events.

This book is based on the findings, issues and questions related to an ongoing decade-old research project named the Innovation Lab (www.innovation-lab.org). The research project focuses on discontinuous innovation in more than thirteen countries, most of which are European, and provides useful insights into its different challenges. It also raises several questions related to the subject, some of which are: how do firms pick up weak signals on emerging — and possibly radically different — innovation? What should firms do when these weak signals hit their “mainstream” process? What are the criteria for allocating resources to a strategic innovation project? What actions should firms take to avoid being left out by the “corporate immune system”? How should firms organize projects that often break existing rules and require new rules to be created? This book attempts to provide answers to the above mentioned questions by gathering information from the research project and also from firms that have tried exploring various ideas, models and insights to tackle discontinuous innovation. Written in a simple and accessible manner, this book will be of interest to both practitioners and academics alike.

Germany S Solar Cell Promotion written by Manuel Frondel and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with categories.

This article demonstrates that the large feed-in tariffs currently guaranteed for solar electricity in Germany constitute a subsidization regime that, if extended to 2020, threatens to reach a level comparable to that of German hard coal production, a notoriously outstanding example of misguided political intervention. Yet, as a consequence of the coexistence of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) and the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), the increased use of renewable energy technologies does not imply any additional emission reductions beyond those already achieved by ETS alone. Similarly disappointing is the net employment balance, which is likely to be negative if one takes into account the opportunity cost of this form of solar photovoltaic support. Along the lines of the International Energy Agency (IEA 2007:77), we therefore recommend the immediate and drastic reduction of the magnitude of the feed-in tariffs granted for solar-based electricity. Ultimately, producing electricity on this basis is among the most expensive greenhouse gas abatement options.

Commitment written by Pankaj Ghemawat and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-08-15 with Business & Economics categories.

To create a competitive advantage, a company must commit itself to developing a set of capabilities superior to its competitors; But such commitments tend to be costly and hard to reverse. How then, should a company decide which broad path, or strategy, to commit itself to? And how are competition and uncertainty to be accounted for in that decision? In this brilliant reassessment of how companies gain and sustain competitive advantage, Pankaj Ghemawat consolidates contemporary research in economics and other disciplines into a comprehensive yet practical framework for comparing commitments to strategically distinct options. This framework will help managers address specific strategic choices such as entry, exit, vertical/horizontal integration, capacity expansion, and innovation, as well as choices of generic strategy. Step by systematic step, Ghemawat provides managers with the tools and techniques they need to improve the quality of the choices that they make. Specifically, Ghemawat discusses: * how to identify the choices that are truly strategic -- that involve commitment -- before rather than after the fact * how to analyze the short-run and long-run competitive positions implied by a particular strategic option * how to assess the sustainability of superior competitive positions over time * how to account for the flexibility afforded by a particular option in dealing with future uncertainties * how to deal with both honest mistakes and deliberate distortions in the process of choice This pathbreaking book will help managers invest in the future. Its logic applies to choices involving disinvestment as well as those involving investment -- and to choices that embody elements of both. Its logic can be used for diagnostic purposes, such as the valuation of business, and most broadly, it win force managers to think about important issues that they may have tended to ignore. Ghemawat's discussion of these important ideas is concise, studded with detailed examples, based on rigorous research and, above all, practical. It will become required reading for thoughtful practitioners as well as practitionersto-be in the 1990s.
