The rise and fall of every organization depend on its leadership. Smite the shepherd and the sheep will scatter! There is no place where this truth is more relevant than in the Church of Christ where it requires the united efforts of a mature congregation and faithful leadership to fulfil God's purpose for His Church. Only rooted and well-established people can bear fruits. Only a faithful leadership, conscious of its responsibility and focused on its calling can take its organization to the next level. We need a culture of faithfulness to reap fruits of our labour. Remember that a big oak tree was once a tiny seed that refused to give up. Only finishers can be winners.

Among followers of Jesus, great is often the enemy of good. The drive to be great—to be a success by the standards of the world—often crowds out the qualities of goodness, virtue, and faithfulness that should define the central focus of Christian leadership. In the culture of today’s church, successful leadership is often judged by what works, while persistent faithfulness takes a back seat. If a ministry doesn’t produce results, it is dropped. If people don’t respond, we move on. This pursuit of “greatness” exerts a crushing pressure on the local church and creates a consuming anxiety in its leaders. In their pursuit of this warped vision of greatness, church leaders end up embracing a leadership narrative that runs counter to the sacrificial call of the gospel story. When church leaders focus on faithfulness to God and the gospel, however, it’s always a kingdom-win—regardless of the visible results of their ministry. John the Baptist modeled this kind of leadership. As John’s disciples crossed the Jordan River to follow after Jesus, John freely released them to a greater calling than following him. Speaking of Jesus, John said: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Joyfully satisfied to have been faithful to his calling, John knew that the size and scope of his ministry would be determined by the will of the Father, not his own will. Following the example of John the Baptist and with a careful look at the teaching of Scripture, Tim Suttle dares church leaders to risk failure by chasing the vision God has given them—no matter how small it might seem—instead of pursuing the broad path of pragmatism that leads to fame and numerical success.

To Change The World written by James Davison Hunter and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-14 with Religion categories.

The call to make the world a better place is inherent in the Christian belief and practice. But why have efforts to change the world by Christians so often failed or gone tragically awry? And how might Christians in the 21st century live in ways that have integrity with their traditions and are more truly transformative? In To Change the World, James Davison Hunter offers persuasive--and provocative--answers to these questions. Hunter begins with a penetrating appraisal of the most popular models of world-changing among Christians today, highlighting the ways they are inherently flawed and therefore incapable of generating the change to which they aspire. Because change implies power, all Christian eventually embrace strategies of political engagement. Hunter offers a trenchant critique of the political theologies of the Christian Right and Left and the Neo-Anabaptists, taking on many respected leaders, from Charles Colson to Jim Wallis and Stanley Hauerwas. Hunter argues that all too often these political theologies worsen the very problems they are designed to solve. What is really needed is a different paradigm of Christian engagement with the world, one that Hunter calls "faithful presence"--an ideal of Christian practice that is not only individual but institutional; a model that plays out not only in all relationships but in our work and all spheres of social life. He offers real-life examples, large and small, of what can be accomplished through the practice of "faithful presence." Such practices will be more fruitful, Hunter argues, more exemplary, and more deeply transfiguring than any more overtly ambitious attempts can ever be. Written with keen insight, deep faith, and profound historical grasp, To Change the World will forever change the way Christians view and talk about their role in the modern world.

This book describes several aspects of contemporary culture that create both opportunities and threats to Christian mission. It offers insights and practices that the church today must embrace in order to live faithfully and witness effectively to the gospel. Following a presentation of the church's history in relation to Western culture, several chapters draw upon specific suggestions in Alasdair MacIntyre's After Virtue--that we live in a fragmented rather than a pluralistic world; how the church has compromised its faithfulness by accommodating the mainstream of morality; implications stemming from the collapse of "the Enlightenment project"; and the need for a "new monasticism" together with forms the life of the church must take to sustain a faithful witness in contemporary culture. Jonathan R. Wilson is Associate Professor of Systematic Theology and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies, Westmont College, Santa Barbara, CA, and the author of Theology as Cultural Critique.

In a society where churches are as numerous as gas stations it begs to ask why the Church should consider planting another. There is mounting evidence that reveals an increase in the closing of churches. Recent surveys report there are thousands of people in America who have renounced their allegiance to Christianity. One pastor even asks, "Is God still planting churches?" It seems almost an ill-fated goal to entertain such a tremendously challenging undertaking as the planting of a church. In such a climate, Pastor Griffin has been led to write this book in faith that the Lord may instill a deep appreciation with strategic and energetic approaches to reframe how churches are birthed and utilized in the communities of our nation. He introduces the idea that Jesus Christ is still inviting Christians to accept His invitation to plant Missional churches in this Post-Christendom culture of America. Cultivating Faithfulness is a response to the prayers of many people who find their faith and passion for Christ received as inconsequential - even at times by other Christians. Rev. Griffin has yielded to the Spirit of Christ to present this book to a nation which increasingly resists the very presence of the Church. He has sought to share the skills he has learned from others as well as his experiential knowledge to encourage those who believe they are called to plant churches, and why they must pursue that call to fulfill it at all costs. "Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness." (Psalm 37:3, 1995) New American Standard Bible "Cultivate has references to planting, labor, and care: Where do we put our care and why? And what is growing? The people in these pieces are in those moments when you consider your choices and find your way." Jennifer Maria Harris, Artist"
