As origens da literarura popular luso-brasileira com temáticas de sempre: crime, sobrenatural, romance. A génese do movimento gótico teve lugar na Alemanha no século XVIII (a balada"Lenore" de Gothfried August B]urger é considerada a obra iniciadora do género). Como nunca antes, numa espécie de onda imparável, a moda espalhou-se pela Europa e pelo mundo ocidental em geral. As razões conjugavam-se para justificar esse sucesso: o livro impresso vulgarizava-se e tornava-se acessível em termos de preço; com mais acesso a fontes de escrita e a projectos pioneiros de ensino, uma grande parte da população começou a aceder com maior ou menor facilidade a uma educação básica que antes era simplesmente inexistente; os escritores encontravam, pela primeira vez, um mercado propriamente dito adequando, pela primeira vez na história, a sua produção a uma procura crescente. Dessa forma encontra-se no gótico literário a génese da literatura policial, fantástica, da ficção científica, da literatura de acção ou, até, da dita literatura romântica. No mundo lusófono, traduções de Ann Radcliffe, Fréderic Soulié e muitos dos primeiros best-sellers do gótico chegaram já no século XIX e o movimento, por cá, mesclou-se, de alguma forma, com o ultra-romantismo. Nesta antologia, preparada por Ricardo Lourenço, encontramos uma amostra choruda dos grandes expoentes do género no universo luso-brasileiro, catalogando uma panóplia de temáticas que vieram a marcr toda a literatura popular dos séculos seguintes e que ainda hoje mantém a sua actualidade bem fresca. Biografia do Autor: Estabelecendo paralelos entre os escritores que cultivaram o género, esta antologia traça um retrato das linhas de influência que ainda hoje se fazem sentir. Ricardo Lourenço nasceu em Lisboa, em 1986. Formou-se em Gestão e Análise Financeira, pelo Instituto Superior de Gestão e Economia. Publicou diversos contos em publicações portuguesas e brasileiras, como a revista Bang! e o Diário Macabro. Actualmente, é responsável pelo Projecto Adamastor, iniciativa dedicada à disponibilização gratuita de clássicos da literatura lusófona, em formato digital. This volume presents an integrated epidemiologic, social, and economic analysis of the global epidemics of HIV among sex workers in low- and middle-income countries. The book provides a comprehensive review and synthesis of the available public health and social science data to characterize the nature, scope, and complexities of these epidemics. A community empowerment-based approach to HIV prevention, treatment, and care is outlined and demonstrated to be cost-effective across multiple settings, with a significant projected impact on HIV incidence among sex workers and transmission dynamics overall. The Global HIV Epidemics among Sex Workers seeks to assist governments, public health implementing agencies, donors, and sex worker communities to better understand and respond to the epidemics among a population facing heightened social and structural vulnerabilities to HIV. The book combines a systematic review of the global epidemiology of HIV among sex workers and in-depth case studies of the epidemiology, policy and programmatic responses and surrounding social contexts for HIV prevention, care and treatment in eight countries. The authors employ mathematical modeling and cost-effectiveness analysis to assess the potential country-level impact of a community empowerment-based approach to HIV prevention, treatment, and care among sex workers when taken to scale in four countries representing diverse sociopolitical contexts and HIV epidemics: Brazil, Kenya, Thailand, and Ukraine. In each setting, greater investment in prevention, treatment, and care for sex workers is shown to significantly reduce HIV. Together these findings underline the urgency of further global investment in comprehensive, human rights-based responses to HIV among sex workers.

This captivating tale is told in two parts. The first presents Lidia Jorge's version of a traditional story about a series of supposed incidents set in Beira, Mozambique. The events take place in the final years of Portugal's colonial African wars as an undisclosed narrator describes the military wedding of a young Portuguese ensign and an equally young bride. The wedding is followed by the mass poisoning of hundreds of native Africans and the arrival of a rain of locusts. The story ends grimly with the groom's suicide. Evita Lopo, the unnamed bride from the first part, narrates the remainder of the story. Twenty years have gone by and she reviews the past and questions the unidentified narrator's rendering of events in the first section. Evita's reminiscences destroy the credibility of the earlier story, and she supplies the reader with a great deal of information that the author of the previous account had suppressed or to which he or she merely alluded. It becomes apparent that betrayal and guilt have motivated all of the characters' actions.

Within a Budding Grove beautifully examines the complex adolescent relationships that the unnamed young narrator begins to witness all around him, including the first pangs of love and the ardent adolescent desires. But most importantly it explores the unbridgeable gap between childhood innocence and the disappointment of adulthood. The novel was scheduled to be published in 1914 but was delayed by the onset of World War I. When published, the novel was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 1919. "My mother, when it was a question of our having M. de Norpois to dinner for the first time, having expressed her regret that Professor Cottard was away from home, and that she herself had quite ceased to see anything of Swann, since either of these might have helped to entertain the old Ambassador . . ." Marcel Proust (1871–1922) was a French novelist, critic, and essayist best known for his monumental novel À la Recherche du Temps Perdu (1913-1927). He is considered by English critics and writers to be one of the most influential authors of the 20th century. Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff (1889–1930) was a Scottish writer, most famous for his English translation of most of Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu, which he published under the Shakespearean title Remembrance of Things Past.
