Excerpt from A Daring Voyage: Across the Atlantic Ocean Gazing from the height out on to the broad Atlantic, beyond the numerous islands on the coast, one of the brothers broke a long silence by saying to the other, Let us cross the old ocean in one of these Dories, pointing down to a number of boats that lay moored almost under where they were sitting. Give me your hand, said the other, I'll go with you; and they Shook hands, agreeing to make the voyage. It was a sudden impulse, but the purpose was formed, and they kept to it. They re solved to wait till the following year, and to start in June, which was thought the best time for so great a voyage. The winter would afford leisure for preparation, and especially for perfecting such knowledge of navigation as would suffice for the under taking. In the tradition of Dava Sobel's Longitude comes sailing expert David Barrie's compelling and dramatic tale of invention and discovery—an eloquent elegy to one of the most important navigational instruments ever created, and the daring mariners who used it to explore, conquer, and map the world. Since its invention in 1759, a mariner's most prized possession has been the sextant. A navigation tool that measures the angle between a celestial object and the horizon, the sextant allowed sailors to pinpoint their exact location at sea. David Barrie chronicles the sextant's development and shows how it not only saved the lives of navigators in wild and dangerous seas, but played a pivotal role in their ability to map the globe. He synthesizes centuries of seafaring history and the daring sailors who have become legend, including James Cook, Matthew Flinders, Robert Fitz-Roy, Frank Worsley of the Endurance, and Joshua Slocum, the redoubtable old "lunarian" and first single-handed-round-the-world yachtsman. He also recounts his own maiden voyage, and insights gleaned from his experiences as a practiced seaman and navigator. Full of heroism, danger, and excitement, told with an infectious sense of wonder, Sextant offers a new look at a masterful achievement that changed the course of history.

In a salty, slashing style, Tristan Jones unfolds his extraordinary saga—a six-year voyage during which he covered a distance equal to twice the circumference of the world—revealing both a rich sense of history and an insuppressible Welsh wit. With a singleness of purpose as ferocious as any hazard he encountered, Tristan Jones would not give up—even after dodging snipers on the Red Sea, capsizing off the Cape of Good Hope, starving in the Amazon, struggling for 3,000 miles against the mightiest sea current in the world, and hauling his boat over the rugged Andes three miles above sea level to find at last the legendary Island of the Sun. And beyond lay the most awesome challenge of all: the tortuous trek through 6,000 miles of uncharted rivers to find his way back to the ocean.
